@weezy1939 MayoClinic doctor and my own eye doctor did not recommend anything except to take good care of my health. Lack of sight has caused me to slow down physically which then causes other problems. Hard to walk in crowds and winter weather so I am in Florida for a month where I can walk fast on beach and not bump into people. When I get back home I am having cataract surgery and hope it clears up what little sight I have. Have any of you had cataract surgery in eye with NAION? My doctor doesn't think it will help but hope I prove him wrong.

@weezy1939 I was told the nerves? or what they are called and there are thousands of them have been destroyed. My NAION happened in right eye in 2011 so until this past winter I lived with that. Many people live with one eye and most of the time I forgot that I had very limited eyesight in right eye. It's unusual I was told that it happens in both eyes and I hope that is the case for you. My eye doctor who has been practicing for thirty years has only seen it 3 times in both eyes. Best of luck to you

@weezy1939 My next appointment is in mid-Dec and need to make a decision by then. This is my first winter coming up with loss of sight in both eyes and I am not looking forward to short days. I see so much better outdoors that I am going to go to Florida for a month late Jan. it is a resort that I have stayed at many times so familiar with it and area. If I have cataract surgery it would be more like March.

Hi @bgoren, I have reread you note many times trying to figure out how to answer you. I have NAION in both eyes and have cataracts.
I too have to make the decision if I should have them removed. My eye surgeon told me there is only a 1% chance something could go wrong and I have to make the decision whether to have it or not. I still can't decide. I read there is only a small chance of getting NAION in both eyes and it didn't happen to me for 8 years. In my right eye I have vision in upper right corner and in left eye I have vision in my lower left corner. It is amazing how a person can get use to the lax of sight. Have you been seen by a Mayo doctor or a eye surgeon?
They can give you an answer.

Hi, @greyhound3, I lost most of my vision in right eye overnight in 2011. I lost my peripheral vision and all except upper right. Most of the time I forgot about the loss of vision in that eye except after almost two accidents I looked to my right several times at a stop sign. This past winter I lost vision in my left eye gradually and thought my lack of eyesight was due to cataracts which I do have. I don’t have any peripheral vision and can’t see under my nose . Please keep in touch as this condition seems to be extremely rare.

You asked how I was doing in July but have not looked at connect. I am legally blind with 10% of my vision. This is my new world and I have adapted to it. I am surprised how rare this condition is. My eye doctor said in 30 years of practice he has only seen this happen 3 times

@weezy1939 I have NAION in both eyes so have only 10% of my vision. I have accumulated to my lack of vision over the last few months. I have learned nothing is to be left where I can fall over it and all cabinet doors must be closed. I have finally learned to slow down. I can see the best outdoors so am loving the long days. Crowds are the hardest so I have to remind my partner to slow down as he holds my hand and steers me in the right direction.
