Tar Heel: I have major issues with tinnitus also. I have reactive tinnitus which means that when I go to public places with people around my tinnitus actually gets worse. I went to a tinnitus clinic here in Wisconsin and they put me on white noise therapy to counter the tinnitus. Couple of times a day I play a river stream flowing…. very soothing! We need to train our brains to ignore the tinnitus…..because that is where it is coming from! Hope this helps!

Hi Joyce’s. I always hear about recruitment but do not understand what that term is. Thanks for your help!

Cherriann: I see you have issues with tinnitus. I am not sure what you hear but I have the tinnitus with the real high pitched ring and also was diagnosed with reactive tinnitus…this is a real low pitched drone. It gets worse when I am exposed to noise…like that found in restaurants or meeting places. I spent 4 hours at the Froedert Tinnitus/Hearing clinic in Milwaukee 6 weeks ago and was very pleased with the time they spent with me. They recommended sound therapy(white noise, etc) several hours and day. I can either use my earmuffs or my Phonak Compilot 2. I should see results within 6-9 months. I will let you know how that works. I am finally understanding the problem. I have been retired for a little over a year. When I was working my office was right above the plants compressor/utility area. The low drone pitch I am hearing now is the noise I was exposed for over 30 years! Isn't that interesting? Just thought I would share this. Hope things get better for you!

Wow Joyce! You are truly an inspiration to those who have hearing difficulties!I think that individuals need to continue doing whatever it takes to make sure they try every possible means to keep hearing! Speaking of organizations I to belong to 3 different ones…two of them I am the secretary! I told both of these boards that my hearing comprehension was roughly 50% and that the minutes of the meetings would be 2 pages instead of 4 they all shrugged their shoulders and said that's fine!!!! Of course no one else wanted to do it! LOL! Have a nice day and keep up the effort!

julie04: You are so correct about the stigma with hearing aids! I have been wearing them for 8 years now as my hearing has deteriorated I do not mind having them show! It actually helps the people around us realize that we have an issue and they become mindful of it. If I needed to wear headphones to hear better I would be all for it. The most important thing is our relationships with family friends and neighbors and hearing what they have to say is very important! Several weeks ago I was at a conference in Chicago in a venue with 800 plus people and struggled somewhat in that environment. There were many people I could see had hearing aids and when I asked them if they could hear they shook their heads no! That is part of the problem….need to speak up and let them know! I’ll get off my soapbox now! God bless your day!

Yesterday I had a 2 1/2 hour appointment at the Froedert Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Program in Milwaukee. That was the best time I have ever spent in regards to my tinnitus and hearing loss! I have severe hearing loss(60db) along with what is called reactive tinnitus. This means that noise exposure actually makes my tinnitus worse. The audiologist(Annie Smith) was just a great person to talk and listen to. My approach going forward will be to use sound therapy to help retrain my brain in regards to my condition. She showed me several free apps which are downloadable and very soothing and comforting. I do not have problems sleeping but these apps would be beneficial to anyone who has trouble getting to sleep. Also I found out that my 3 year old Phonaks(Audeo B-70's) need more amplification so I will be getting that done also. I would highly recommend Froedert for these type of issues! Have a great day!
