Mar 4, 2019 · High frequency hearing test: What hearing aids are best? in Hearing Loss

@gulzar Your hearing loss is more severe than mine with sharper drop off after 1k and more loss from there through higher frequencies. That being said, I have been very happy with my bilateral Widex Unique Fusion 440s. I rather suspect there is more difference between models of the same manufacturer than between manufacturers. I lucked out with having a great first audiologist. We got on well and I trusted her recommendations. I felt she provided an adequate assessment of my hearing and based recommendations on matching the technology with my hearing loss. Based on my experience, conversations with others and reading the audiologist is the key component in getting hearing aids along with your own experience. Sounds like you are well informed! Hope you find a decent vendor. Glad you have a good audiologist and trust their recommendations. I wish you the best in dealing with your hearing loss.

Not sure I am posting this in proper location of the board.
re: Can you explain more how your hearing aids are customized for birding?
The first audiologist I saw (2016) was awesome! Wanted to know about my activities and how hearing loss impacted me. Very collaborative. From the beginning doing something to help my "birding by ear" skills was on the list. I had a number of species I expected to hear but missed. I'd be in good habitat, or with other birders, and I didn't hear kinglets, or cedar waxwings, and other species with higher frequency calls. I downloaded spectrograms of calls of calls of these species. I use Widex Unique Fusion 440 bilaterally. My audiologist adapted the "Quiet" program to:
Impulse off
High-frequency boost
Wind attenuation on
Omnidirectional microphone
Soft noise set to standard
This program has been awesome for me. I don't always get complete calls but enough for identification. Even localization works pretty good. Made an enormous difference in my quality of life!

Glad to join up on Connect. I was an intermittent participant on the HLAA forum. I am 69 y/o retired guy with passion for birding, bicycling, nature. Volunteer naturalist with local metroparks. Perpetually beginning ASL student. Bilateral moderate to severe hearing loss. BTE HAs for 4 years. Have a hearing aid program customized for birding that works pretty well. Meetings, noisy environments, family interactions very frustrating. Use streamer to cell phone, streamer from TV sound system, caption phone. Greetings to all.
