Mon, Apr 1 7:23am · Bronchiectasis: New Diagnosis in MAC & Bronchiectasis

Newly diagnosed and waiting for results from bronchoscopy 6 weeks ago. On average, how long does it take for results? Not coughing much but becoming short of breath more often. Becoming more aware of my surroundings and staying away from sick people, then my husband comes down with a terrible cold. What a challenge. Thanks!

@ann0616 My diagnosis of bronchiectasis came out of the blue. I had an abdominal CT scan to look for pancreatic cancer (had breast cancer in 2016) and luckily no cancer, but they noted the bronchiectasis. An MRI and high-resolution CT scan confirmed the bronchiectasis and mucous plugging with suspected MAI. I was surprised because I had no symptoms that many describe and was referred to a pulmonologist. My pulmonary function studies were normal. Instead of a series of sputum cultures, I was sent for bronchoscopy and I am still waiting for the results of that in about 3 more weeks. The only lung problems I recall are occasional colds that lead to bronchitis. No asthma or pneumonia problems. My pulmonologist discussed with me the antibiotic treatment if results are positive versus repeat CT scans if negative. I hope this helps. Great for you that your cultures are negative!! I work out as much as I can but my diet is not that good, so looking to make some adjustments..

@extracare808. I am sure you are right. I think I got things messed up when I talked to the PA. My appointment with the doctor wasn't to be until next Wednesday (27th), but the day after my bronchoscopy I started feeling terrible. I got in to see the PA and she told me this which I apparently misunderstood. She did order steroids for a viral infection that worked great and within a day was back to normal. No aching and no cough. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. This site has been so helpful to me!.

Ha ha! I spoke too soon earlier. I breezed through the bronchoscopy on Tuesday, that evening and the next morning. Quite a bit of coughing but no sore throat. By Wednesday afternoon I felt sick and continually got worse over the next couple days. Just all-over aches and pains, no stuffiness or sore throat, mostly bone pain. Ended up in the doc office with a viral infection and PA put me on steroids for 5 days. Finally feeling a little better this morning. Don't know if I picked up a bug at the hospital or if it was already brewing before the scope. It was nasty whatever it was. While I was there, I was told the initial cultures were clear, but as you all know, it is the fungal report that is the key. He is sure I have it so, just have to wait for confirmation then referral to ID.

Since a bronchoscopy on Tuesday, I have been told that the cultures are clear, but the fungi check which takes many weeks is for the MAC/MCI. However, bronchiectasis with chronic infection (MCI) was noted by 3 different physicians on an abdominal CT scan, an abdominal MRI and a HRCT lung scan, so I figure it is going to be there on the path report. Never knew I had a problem until a couple weeks ago when it was noted on a routine abdominal scan following my breast cancer. So, added another doctor (pulmonologist) to my list and looks like an ID doc in my future. My breast cancer was an ATM gene mutation, so who knows if the bronch was a gene-thing also?

Yes, i am so glad I did not hear that story before the procedure, Terri. Let this be a lesson to those undergoing in the future, conscious sedation and everything will be fine.

Once again, thank you all for the support with my anxiety issues about having my first bronchoscopy. The hospital staff was great. I was totally out for the whole procedure and don't remember a thing. Quite a bit of coughing in the evening, but nothing significant. Now… wait for the path report and the next step of my journey. Yes, this site does help.

@windwalker That is great that you were able to control your acid reflux. I am curious at to what lifestyle changes you made for it to go away? I have been on omeprazole for years and would like to get off of it. I imagine I will have to give up my wine and chocolate for a start.
