Thu, Jul 25 5:10am · Aortic Aneurysms – Introduce yourself & meet others in Aortic Aneurysms

A 4.4 thoracic aneurysm was accidentally discovered in 2015 and since then have had yearly CT Scans and echo-cardiograms. As the repeated tests show no growth, both my cardiologist and my heart surgeon have agreed I can now just repeat the echo cardiogram every year and the CT scan every other year, I am happy with that conclusion as I was always concerned with the amount of radiation I was receiving. I keep my BP in check, watch the cholesterol, try to eat healthy, exercise daily and never pick up anything heavier than 15 lbs. I've learned to live with it and not to worry and am happier for it.

I certainly wish there were a different way of measuring the size of an aneurysm, or, better yet, one I can understand. As my last CT Scan report stated a larger size than the previous year, I was so alarmed I later called the cardiology department nurse to ask for an explanation and the answer I received was so ambiguous & confusing it was apparent it was a search for a reply. When I'm told not to worry when I see the size getting larger, its very hard not to become even more frightened than what I already am. Can anyone offer a reasonable answer?

My cardiologist stresses the importance of keeping the blood pressure, cholesterol & weight numbers at a satisfactory number. He also keeps reminding me of the importance to keep the stress level down. I have asked about supplements sold over-the-counter and he puts no stock in these. He also has never discussed "strengthening the aorta'.

My Ascending Aortic Aneurysm was also found during a test for another matter and was very frightened by my doctor's comments regarding this find. This was back in 2015 and the measurement was 4.3 x 4.3. I have learned to live with this due to my yearly CT Scan and Ultra Sound tests show it has not grown. I, too, am always aware to make sure I do not pick up anything more than 20 pounds. Aside from the heart surgeon I see yearly, I also see a cardiologist who monitors my blood pressure and cholesterol numbers. Now that I have accepted the diagnosis, I stress less and lead my life as I normally would.

I was told if the aneurysm should grow, I would need open heart surgery due to its location. My hope is in the near future there will be another procedure less invasive. The medical advances made year after year signifies to me there will be other avenues for us. With all this being said, I'm back to enjoying my life !!
