Oct 18, 2018 · Tips on minimising withdrawal symptoms from Effexor (aka Venlafaxine) in Depression & Anxiety

Klonopin definitely helps — but you have to be cautious….while Effexor has unpleasant withdrawal….withdrawal from a benzo like klonopin can be dangerous for some people. Try not to use it for more than a day or two….more than that and you risk some psychological/physical habit.

Seroquel is a usually a serious drug. I'm not sure, but don't think it is something to go off cold-turkey….it could cause serious mood swings and possibly psychosis….the effexor withdrawal is not pleasant, but rarely dangerous. If you were prescribed both (and had to stop the effexor for the antibiotics – although I've never heard of it being contraindicated ) – I would try to speak with the doctor…..MRSA plus an SNRI plus an atypical antipsychotic is a complicated regimen.

Effexor stopped working for me after about 15 years. It wasn't hurting, and it wasn't helping. I took about 6 weeks to get off from 150mg. I held at 37.5mg for about three weeks because I was having side effects and a crazy time at work, but went to zero maybe three or four weeks ago. My side effects are largely gone. I've started on a sub-clinical dose of lexapro (5mg) to help with some continued depression…so far, it has helped with the last of my effexor withdrawal side effects (I think – or it's just the effexor is really out of my system or both) -and the lexapro has helped improve my energy to some extent.

You are absolutely right – one doesn't know how they will be affected by a taper…and it is not knowing when the symptoms will stop that is completely exasperating. It's really awful that you are still experiencing problems six months out…but hopefully for you (and your husband) things will settle down over time. A number of people suggest a prozac bridge….have you spoken to your MD about that? In my case I am taking a low (5mg) dose of lexapro – but that is because my depression symptoms are not gone – but the effexor wasn't helping. It's only been a week, but the lexapro has tamped down some of the negative side effects of the effexor withdrawal (or I've been fortunate enough to get through the effexor stuff).

Your symptoms were generally consistent with mine — with the exception that I had a couple of weeks of hot flashes and irritability…but I've been completely off almost 3 weeks (and on a very low dose of lexapro – 5mg – for one week). It was awful at times – but it passed relatively quickly.

Actually – they are very similar drugs and were developed by the same company. If I am reading correctly, Pristiq's primary active compound (desvenlafaxine) – is what effexor becomes after your liver has metabolized it. So Pristiq may be quicker and easier to metabolize…and perhaps have fewer side effects as you get on it. However, that doesn't mean that your experience with the drugs will be similar. Pristiq is still under patent — so no generics….hence why your insurance doesn't want to pay for it. You can always file an appeal with the insurer – to win an appeal your doctor would have to show that you tried effexor (step therapy) and it wasn't tolerable but that you tolerated Pristiq and it was effective. It's not a guarantee that it will be covered – but it's your best chance. Cymbalta is quite similar to Effexor – but doesn't have the need to titrate up – could be another drug to suggest to your MD.

Yuck! Most of us have been there…or still are there. I will say that my taper was actually somewhat faster but more gradual: 1 week at 112.5, 1 week at 75, 1 week at 37.5….although I hung at 37.5 for about 3 weeks because it is where I started to have withdrawal symptoms. They are awful, but as some note, they will also pass (that's what my psychiatrist said after I had a particularly bad day and my therapist suggested I call the psychiatrist). It passes. Some days are worse than others – but 18 days off the stuff completely and I am down mostly to facial numbness, some irritability, and sleeping that is kind of erratic…along with the occasional hot flash. You'll get through it, but you may be miserable. It never hurts to call the doctor to say that you are miserable – if only to get acknowledgment that you are not making things up.

ADD presents somewhat differently depending on age and gender…but depression and anxiety are common comorbidities. There are (as you may know) different types/mixes of ADD along three axis – inattentiveness, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Interestingly in women, the hyperactivity often shows as racing thoughts at night instead of the typical fidgety hyperactivity associated with boys.
