Sep 29, 2018 · Tips on minimising withdrawal symptoms from Effexor (aka Venlafaxine) in Depression & Anxiety

@catamite I can definitely relate to how you’re feeling! I am now almost a month from my last dose and today was my first day of driving. I went to the local Target about 3 miles away and was shaking like a leaf. I don’t trust myself driving yet. The zaps are still overwhelming I’m averaging about 4 hours of sleep and that keeps drowsy all day. Although I will say I feel better than that first two weeks when I could hardly make my way to the bathroom, I’m just anxious to be done with this drug! Hang in there.. better days are coming.

Well tomorrow will be my first day of week 4 without any Effexor and I’m still blown away by the amount of brain zaps I’m having and how there is no rhyme or reason for them. I had been taking 25 mg for almost a year for hot flashes and seems that it wasn’t doing a great job and am scheduled to try a different method if I can get my head straight. I am not driving and having problems staying focused and in task when on my computer. Watching TV is bothersome and reading books is worse! I had to walk down stairs on an escalator that wasn’t working. The lines of the steps began to run together and I had my first real panic attack. I had to hold on to my daughters shoulders in front of me and not look down at all. It was horrible!!
I have had a few (3) days where I felt clearer but not so much that I could drive I would get hopeful and the wake the next morning with the dizziness all that vet again. My family is going on holiday next week and will be on a boat for 5 days. Right this minute, it seems like it will be torture. Only 7 more days to get my head screwed on straight. Ugh.

@maryfrances you and are in the same boat! That is why my dr prescribed Effexor too. It was supposed to stop hot flashes, which by the way. It NEVER did!! I always save the patient information sheets that I get with my meds and it doesn’t say anything about these symptoms of brain zaps or dizziness or confusion. I’m on day 5 with out and it has been a rough road.
I have an appointment with my PCM on Tuesday to discuss the symptoms. We are military and hopefully by including the commander, I can at least have them start looking into it. This drug came out in 1993. It seems it maybe they need to at the very least, revise the information sheets to Include these symptoms.

@stlouisgmajenn how long have you been weaning off of it? I’ve been trying for about 6 months now. I had my son go to Mr Nice Guys and buy me a scale so I could weigh out the little granules in the capsules. I got myself down to about 25 mg and then my dr suggested I just “rip off the bandage”. Those brain zaps are no joke! I’ve been on some pretty heavy meds in my life and have never had this much trouble getting off of them. I’m on day 5 and feeling a bit better and the zaps aren’t near as strong. Triggers are moving my head or eyes too fast, loud sounds, and closing my eyes while standing. It seems to close me and go in waves. Early mornings suck late evenings are definitely better.
Wishing you all good things and if you happen to hear about a suit against them, please let me know

Great news @craig633! That’s awesome How long was it before you didn’t have the dizziness? Right now (5dayswithout) it’s my biggest hurdle. I’m going on holiday with my family in 14 days and don’t think I can handle the stupid brain zaps /dizziness.

@idwhite720 for me, the brain zaps are the worst! It kind of feel like eyes and brain are just slightly off So if I’m super still and don’t move you head or eyes, I feel pretty good. But any loud noise, movement of my head or eyes causes a short second of dizziness. Mine are in threes. So I’ll get 3 zaps at a time It kind of feels like it takes a second for my brain to follow my eyes. It’s the craziest feeling I’m now in day three and it comes and goes. I’m ready for it to be done!! Staying hydrated, sleep, and keeping things calm have helped me. Hope you continue to move forward too!

I’ve been on 37.5 and have talked to my doctor in great detail about it. The feeling is that because I don’t suffer with depression that other than the side effects Of the zaps and nausea, I hopefully will be ok. Still feel crappy but ok.

I’m a 54 yr old Mom of 3 mini adult (18,19,&21). I was prescribed Effexor about 18 months ago for hot flashes! I struggled going on it and the pharmacist encouraged me to open the capsules and put the beads in yogurt to help with the nausea and at one point even suggesting that I ask the dr for a higher dose! Of course, being a “good patient” I tried my best to take the pills even though I lost 15 pounds in the process. Now I’ve been trying to get off of it for 8 months because I still have the hot flashes and if I’m even an hour late on my dosage, the brain zaps are overwhelming. Today is my first 24 hours with out it and I’m having problems just moving my head without the zaps. I encourage everyone to research EVERYTHING your doctor prescribes before putting anything in your body !!! Especially now that google has taken over the world :0). I love my doc and know she didn’t mean to cause this. I also realize that this med had probably saved thousands of lives but for symptoms like mine, the effects are far worse than the cause!! I really appreciate everyone’s advice, support, helpful ideas. Many Blessings
