Sun, May 10 11:00am · Medications for Temporal Arteritis/Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) in Autoimmune Diseases

I was lucky to be diagnosed with temporal Arteritis quickly after only 2-3 weeks of classic symptoms—headache, painful to touch my head, and jaw pain. I started 40mg Prednisone next morning and all symptoms were Gone in 2-3 hours. Then I had biopsy of right temporal artery to confirm. I subsequently got a rheumatologist who put me on methotrexate to complement the Prednisone, and I visited every few months as well as regularly monitored my blood. My regular doctor also prescribed meds to offset negative reactions to Prednisone which I weaned down to 0mg over two years. Next Month (June 2020) will be my meds-free anniversary, and for that I am very grateful. I wish you well and good luck

I never heard of temporal arteritis either when I was diagnosed. However it’s not some weird mysterious disease doctors don’t know about. My doc quickly diagnosed it and confirmed with a biopsy; my rheumatologist treats giant cell arteritis on a regular basis. Trust your doctors.

I guess I was lucky to have had excellent quick diagnosis and care, and no symptoms or side effects from the Prednisone. I started on the two year reduction program at 40 mg which eliminated my headache and jaw pain in two hours, was completely off the Prednisone and Methotrexate last June 1st, and only need my blood checked every six months. Good luck.

It’s Captainkenny. Have not been active on Mayo Connect for several months now for a couple reasons: GCA (temporal arteritis) sharing morphed into lots of exotic autoimmune diseases beyond my interest, and I was really turned off be several posts from obviously non-medical professionals, offering medical advice, which is irresponsible.
I was fortunate to have been quickly diagnosed and confirmed by biopsy with Temporal Arteritis only two weeks after my symptoms—headaches, tender to the touch forehead and temples, and jaw pain so intense I couldn’t chew my cereal. That was 16 months ago. Started on 40 mg Prednisone and symptoms were gone in 2-3 hours without return, except for two minor headache scares. Now down to 7 mg Prednisone and Methotrexate, see RA every 4 months and blood lab every 3 months. I’m 82 and workout at gym most days and walk an hour every day, so I’m grateful exercise doesn’t cause me problems because it’s been an important part of my lifestyle for many years. Good luck to all you GCA afflicted and stay positive.

Hey Oregongirl, It will be a year in July for me too since my Temporal Arteritis (TA) diagnosis, and still no conclusive treatment for my itchy rash that I have been doctoring with my regular MD, four dermatologists, and a rheumatologist. Two biopsies and lots of blood lab work, and tried several meds without success. My delima: Dermatologist thinks it’s part of my TA (I do too), and Rheumatologist doesn’t think it’s related. Just consulted with my MD about going to Mayo Clinic, he suggested I try another dermatologist first. So He wrote an urgent referral and I have a Wednesday appointment.

Hi Colleen, Thanks for your welcoming me to Mayo Clinic Connect. I have shared a few times and need your help in navigating the system. I was diagnosed July 2017 with Giant Cell (temporal) Arteritis, and have appreciated pertinent shares on GCA, but so often get sidetracked to another unrelated group. Apparently I am not correctly unsubscribing from groups I’m not interested in following. Thanks for your help.

I only needed my biopsy on right side too. It was a simple procedure done by an ENT.
