My infectious disease doctor and my lung specialist had advised me to refrain from taking antibiotics unless my condition worsen. When I was initially diagnosed, I coughed a lot and even coughed up blood. That only happened twice. The coughing continued for some time. Presently, it has eased up considerably. However, it never forgets to remind me that it's still there. Recently it's sleep time that I worry about it showing up. Even if I would take the two antibiotics that work with my MAC, they will only work 50% of the time.
I was diagnosed with MAC and another bacteria over two years ago. Apparently, one is not good enough. Out of the ten antibiotics that were capable of working wonders on my bacteria, only 2 would be effective and only 50% of the time. Lucky me. Fortunately, my infectious disease (one retired and another took over) specialists, both discouraged me with starting the cocktail of drugs. They advised me to stay clear, because of obvious side effects, of the medicine as long as I was feeling o.k. Over the years the symptoms would come and go. For the last 6-7 months, I have (knock on wood or maybe gold) had minor flare-ups. For whatever it's worth (And I'm not claiming anything here), I'm a vegetarian and have been for 45years. (I'm 81)
MAC periodically reminds me that its still there, waiting to strike at any moment.

Nothing yet. It's why I put out the feeler, hoping others may know of a possible immune therapy. I've asked my infectious disease md, but no response yet. Will let you know when I know. jerry s

I was diagnosed with MAC a little over 2 years ago. Have not yet starting taking antibodies. Although I suspect this will happen in the very near future. Has anyone explored alternative treatment, i.e. immune therapy?
