Apr 3, 2018 · Foot problems after TKR in Bones, Joints & Muscles

My ankle was swollen for few weeks after the surgery. Few days after the surgery I forgot to use the compression sleeves, on the operated leg and it really swelled up. I called my doctors office to see if it was normal. They ignored my question completely and asked my about my calf instead. She told me if it’s tight and hurting go to the ER and get checked for a possible blood clot. Luckily, it only cost me the ER fees, and no clot. So please make sure that you rule out the blood clot.

As for as walking is considered, just watch any 4 year old kid to see how they walk. They don’t use heel to toe, instead it’s the whole foot forward and they never straighten their knees. Following that method I was able to walk few miles a day before my tkr, instead of few hundred feet with a bone on bone knee which was completely worn out. This is also called CHI walking. I tried to find a good link for chi walking but unfortunately couldn’t do so. There are too many people pretending to be the experts on the topic with crazy videos.

I’ve told by some serious marathon runners at the gym that they use the whole foot, not the heel to toe.

It was pretty steady. 5 days after the surgery the Pt measured me at 50, I still had the staples on the incision at that time. It was 80 the week after when I saw her again. My Pt used the tape that most athletes use to help with the bruises and swelling. It went steady from there 90, 98, 108, 120, into 130s. After 138 I had a set back and she measured me at 120 but she worked on it 7ntill she measure at 139, and it measured 140 and the last session at 142. I got released from the therapist yesterday And am enjoying a free day today but will be at it tomorrow morning to keep it 140s.

Leg raises help with swelling. Legs up the wall pose, you can find that on line at yogajournal.com. I was asked to raise my leg at least four times a day.

Well, I just followed my PT’s direction. Strength building exercises were the easy part, bending not so much. After warming up and massaging the scar tissue I’ll lie on my back, bring my thigh/knee in vertical position and take few deep breaths, with each exhale if you relax your body the the foot will come down a few mm. The key for me was to completly relax. Every morning the knee will be stuck let’s say at 80 degrees or so even though I’d have a knee bend of 110 or more at the therapist the day before. But I was able to loosen it up and match it pretty close to where the therapist had left me. Some times I’ll put my hiking boot on the foot to assist with the weight. I did the same with the therapist. I could never relax with her not knowing when she was going to push, so I followed my own procedure ther3. She just sat n3xt to me with measurement tool. Again, the key for me was to relax.

On a side note I’m pretty limber to start with which also helped me. I rarely sit on the couch at home, instead prefer sitt In on the carpet, that can amazingly make one more flexible.

I hope that it helps. Good luck to you!!!

I had tkr on January 29,2018. I had 10 therapy sessions with the Pt. I had my pt manipulate the scar tissue with her thumbs on every sessions, I did my exercises at the gym. She also did dry kneedling when ever she found a tight spot on the thigh that was hindering the bend. The last few days I was instructed to bend my knee every 30 minutes even if I was sitting in a chair. I had a steady progress with many hours of hard work. She finally discharged me yesterday. I was very fortunate to be able to measure at 142 degree bend. I owe my success to lots of scar tissue manipulation by the Pt and the spinning bike. I was also very religious doing all the exercises I was told to do. I still can feel little snapping of the scar tissue in the knee while I’m biking. I had my other knee replaced in 2011 and it has a bend 146 degrees. I just wanted to share my success story so it might be an inspiration for someone.

I have had similar problems with my thumbs, and Naproxen was not helping at all. It was, as if the medication was hurting instead. A friend recommended tart cherry juice and turmeric pills. After few months of eating better ( more vegetables) and following friends advice my thumbs are completely pain free. I’m 68.
