Nov 23, 2018 · (MAC/MAI) MYCOBACTERIUM AVIUM COMPLEX PULMONARY DISEASE/BRONCHIECTASIS in MAC & Bronchiectasis

Good morning all, My husband just had a sputum test and once again the results are pseudomonous aeruginosa. This time it is +3. Does anyone know the difference between +1, +2 and +3 pseudomonous? My husband also has MAC but is currently not taking anything because the big 3 caused him to lose quite a bit of weight and get very run down. We see the Infectious Disease and the Pulmonologist doctors next week.

Do either one of your neice’s parents have HD? You indicated that it has been diagnosed in the father’s family. Does the father have HD or has he been diagnosed with HD? My understanding is that an individual has to inherit the gene from one of their parents. It is a shame that she won’t be tested? If she does have it, it is possible that her kids could inherit the gene also. It is a terrible debilitating disease. I currently have a sister in law, neice and nephew with the disease. Fortunately, my husband tested negative.

Right now he is not taking any antibiotics whatsoever. His doctor said he will not treat the pseudo until it flairs up again. He was (about 3 -4 weeks ago) receiving Zosin by IV for pseudo. Right now he is doing well except for fatigue. I know that another flair up is probably around the corner but I will enjoy him feeling pretty good for now.

Thank you for your response Terri. My husband has been off all antibiotics for nearly 1 month now. He has gained 3 pounds and he is eating very well. He is still lacking energy and sleeping about 14 hours out of a 24 hour day. The doctors are saying that is due to the infections (Mac and pseudomonous). However, the pseudomonous must be lurking in the background for now because he has not had a flair up since the end of July. The ID doctor wants to begin the Big 3 again but we want to hold off for at least 2 months so that my husband can get stronger. The ID doctor is indicating that he will give him 1/2 the dosage and only 5 days per week. Do you ever wonder if the ID doctors get some sort of kick back from the pharmaceutical companies for getting their patients to purchase the big 3 antibiotics?

I haven’t posted anything for quite awhile. My husband, who has MAC, COPD & Bronchieactasis had a flair up and was in the hospital for 9 days. He came home with an IV and I was given a crash course in giving him the infusion every 6 hours. It worked out fine for the 4 days that he needed the antibiotic. While he was in the hospital he was diagnosed with pneumonia and pseudomonous again. The pneumonia is gone but the pseudomonous is still present but not active. It must stay dormant in the body until the next flair up. Right now he is not taking any antibiotics due to the side effects. He has gained back his appetite and for the first time in over 1 – 2 years, he has gained 2 pounds. Fully dressed he now weighs 110. He is extremely thin. He is very tired and sleeps about 11 hours at night and then he takes a 3 hour nap every day. I think it is the infections that make him so tired. He has two new nodules in each upper lobe with irregular borders. Anyone familiar with this type of nodules. I am worried that he is getting cancer but we won’t know for sure until the end of November when they do another cat scan.

What causes the swallowing problems? Is it advanced COPD or MAC? My husband is in the hospital with pneumonia and yesterday they did a swallowing test because he is also having some problems.
