A pillow with a hole is a big help, but you don't have to order one. I just bought a contour memory foam pillow and cut about a 6 inch hole in the center. As long as I keep my ears over the hole, I don't have the pain. I've also successfully used a shredded memory foam pillow that was lightly packed enough to kind of make a well in the center. Also, if you can find a way to sleep at a side angle instead of directly on your side – I can do it on the couch or with a body pillow that can't move away from me – it keeps the amount of direct pressure less and I'm less likely to wake up in pain. I would love to find a 'cure", but until then at least I can sleep through the night most of the time.

I've posted before trying to find answers or share any small successes. I haven't had any ear pain for about a month now. I don't know if it's elevation or position, but I had to start sleeping on my couch because I can only sleep on my sides. This caused my hips to hurt all the time from the pressure. Switching to the couch, my head is more elevated and I'm able to sleep at an angle instead of directly on my sides. It fixed the hip problem and my ear pressure problem went away as well. I don't know why, I just know it's such a relief not to be woken every hour because my ears are screaming in pain. Hope this helps someone else. I know many of the posts are a bit different to the type of pain I experience, but a significant number exactly describe what I feel like. It's like I've bent my ear cartilage over and pressed it against my head.

@saraann Mine is also only when sleeping on my side. I've tried lots of stuff I've found recommended on this site and others with no luck. The doctors just look at you while you describe the pain, say "huh" and move on. The last thing I tried that helps wasn't actually related to my ears, but to my hips. I ordered a shredded memory foam body pillow because I can't get the poly filled pillows to stay put between my knees when I sleep. The one I ordered has a medium amount of fill and is long enough to go between my legs and also under my head. I am able to punch out a "well" for my ear to rest over and I've had almost no ear pain with this. It works for me,so I thought I'd at least mention it. It's not a diagnosis or a cure, but at least it reduces the symptoms. It's the Milliard Body Pillow with Shredded Memory Foam (Long Pillow) if you are interested. The best $40 I've ever spent. Good luck!

I feel you – so aggravating to yet another crazy thing the docs can't tell you what is and you sound crazy when you try and tell them about it. Tried so many things – different vitamins and minerals, went for a sleep study in case it was that. I did need a CPAP, but it didn't help with the ear pain unfortunately. I bought one of the little foam travel pillows with a hole for the ear, and it seemed to help, but was too small and I kept having to re-position it through the night to keep my ear over the hole. I got the bright idea to get a memory foam pillow and cut out a section to accommodate the small pillow inside it. Well, that didn't really work. I took out the small pillow, and then just for kicks, I put a soft cotton pillowcase over the big pillow which now had a BIG hole in it and tried that. It works better than anything I've tried. I still don't get as much rest as I'd like because I can only sleep on my sides, but it is better.

FYI – read through the reviews before purchasing this one. Apparently the real Chiroflow pillows are only available through chiropractors and are not sold “online”. Even their official website refers you to a chiropractor that sells them with no way to order one directly. I don’t know how they could get away with using the name brand and logo if they aren’t real if that is the case. Just a good idea to research before buying.

There is an OTC cream with only Lidocaine in it and you can get it at any pharmacy, but the cream I’m using has Lidocaine and Prilocaine in it, and It’s by prescription only. I don’t know if the OTC one would be as effective. If you’ve been in contact with your Dr. about this, maybe he/she would be willing to give you a prescription for it if you try the OTC one and it doesn’t provide relief for you.

That makes a certain amount of sense. Hope it’s a permanent fix for you!

No – you surely don’t want to have to take Motrin every single night. I’m not aware of any side effects of repeated use of the caine cream, but it works amazingly well. Actually, I’ve had three nights in a row with no pain and no cream or vitamin treatment. Don’t ask me to explain why that would be because I’ve had the pain every single night with the exception of the brief relief after starting the calcium and D, and the nights I did use the cream till now. I don’t understand what’s different, but something is. I’m certainly not going to complain about it and just be thankful for whatever it is. Hope you find a safe and reliable way to combat yours.
