Dec 30, 2018 · Pancreatectomy in Digestive Health

I am happy to assist in any way I can. I had a modified whipple procedure in July 2015 and then a distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy in March 2017. In the last few months I have experienced some digestive problems that prompted me to see a GI doctor. He is in the process of ruling in or out how much of it is related to the removal of part of the pancreas. I am not taking enzymes but not sure that will not be in my future. My case is complicated by the modified whipple procedure which rerouted my intestines to assist with helping my pancreas drain. While our cases are different, there may be some questions I can answer and I am happy to answer if I can. Best wishes.

I wish I could be more helpful. I have had a distal pancreatectomy but not a total. What specific information about the procedure are you seeking for your family member?

In addition to the information I sent yesterday and in reference to your question about not being able to locate the tumor:
I was still symptomatic after my first surgery and 18 months later the hospital where I was receiving treatment could not find additional tumors. I ended up at Mayo for a second opinion and through several testing methods Mayo was able to locate and remove 9 additional tumors. There are incredible resources and technology available for patients with insulinomas at Mayo!

Having been there twice, I will say: Best wishes with your surgery! Take care.

The spleen helps fight infection. Vaccines foe pneumonia and meningitis are very important. Here is the link to Mayo information on splenectomy:https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/splenectomy/about/pac-20395066

Thanks. I am doing well. I will be coming back to Mayo in June for follow up. My issues are not entirely resolved so they are continuing to monitor for recurrence. I am always happy to help someone else going through the process!

I look forward to talking with you. I am a RN as well and had some similar experiences. Having the knowledge about symptoms is helpful. It is rare and a difficult diagnosis at best. Happy to help in anyway I can.

Thanks! Each surgery and recovery is really dependent on the location of the tumor(s). My first surgery was a modified whipple procedure where intestines were rerouted and recovery was impacted by how quickly my intestines started functioning again (not very quickly). My second surgery removed the distal part of my pancreas and my spleen. The impact of no spleen is lifelong. The surgeon is the best person to assist with expectations and recovery.
