Sep 11, 2016 · Leaky Gut, Constipation and Gluten Free? in Digestive Health

Hi there. I have rheumatoid arthritic thus had started a plant basis diet ~ 3 month ago. Organic poultry and wild caught fish become a special treat that I only eat one a week. I also stay with gluten free. This new diet and gluten free has help me tremendously as I have less pain, less fatigue and have more energy to head to the gym 3 times a week. I have done ton of research about gluten. Oat for instant is gluten free; however, if the oat is processed along with other grains through a same processing machine then It has cross contamination and is not gluten free. Brown rice and quinoa are also gluten free if they are not cross contaminated. I don’t know where you live. I live in California so I leverage on Costco for all my organic foods and gluten free foods. Their prices are also cheaper than whole food or other specialty stores.

Thanks! Sorry for not responding. It has been relatively hectic trying to settle in our new rental apartment in San Diego. My husband just completed 2 weeks of proton radiation and chemo. He seems to be fine other than minor fatigue. His taste buds have changed since bottled water now tastes like salt water. We manage with favored water for now. The radiation oncology said he may not experience radiation side effects until week 4 or 5 due to lower radiation doses. With proton radiation, the doctor was able to avoid the saliva gland and tongue on the right. The left side of the saliva gland will be impacted since his cancerous tumor was hiding inside of the voice box. Anyway, I am keeping my fingers crossed and hope he will ride this out without major long term side effects.

Lzzie, my husband Doctor also give him Biotene. You can buy this online. I found a website in New Zealand that carries this. Biotene supposes to help with dry mouth. I am not sure about Spry. Here is the link to the website for Biotene.

Thank you for the words of encouragement! I think I am good for now. I have done ton of research and have read every articles related to head and neck cancer that I can find. I have quite a few recipes collected and will try to see if that will help him. He is probably ok during the first week of treatment. Most of the difficulties will start from week 3 onward. I just need to stay strong and healthy so I have the energy to help him through this. Thanks and stay strong. You and your husband are in our prayers.

Coleen, thank you for the invitation! As a caregiver, the emotional up and down can be very stressful at time. Since my husband diagnosed with throat cancer in late June, life has not been the same. Although he has HPV positive throat cancer and is considered a curable cancer, the treatment journey will be difficult since radiation will impact his ability to eat and swallow. I am also very concerned about the long term side effect and his qualify of life. We have great relationship. This latest event gets us even closer. We just take it day by day.

Izzie, sorry to hear about all the complications you have to deal with. My husband was recently diagnosed with throat cancer, stage 2. He will start chemo and 7 weeks of radiation at the Proton Radiation treatment center in San Diego. Although we live near Stanford cancer treatment center in Northern California, we decided we would avoid the IMRT radiation (x-Ray version) and chose Proton and hope to spare the surrounding healthy tissues and minimize the long terms side effects. I am very concerned about the upcoming treatment though. I heard dry mouth, mouth sore, fatigue and not able to swallow are the big issues for patients with head and neck cancer. My husband is 56 and is in excellent health so I pray that he would get through treatment with a positive outcome. Stay strong and you are in our prayers.

sylviapf, thank you for responding. The oncology said my husband thoat cancer is curable since it is HPV (Human papillomavirus) positive. He will start 7 weeks of proton radiation and chemo next week. We are praying for a good outcome even though the treatment journey will be difficult. I read several articles on the Internet, radiation and chemo have many side effects such as mouth ulcer, dry mouth, swelling, difficult swallowing, and fatigue etc. I am sorry sick about his upcoming treatment.
