YouTube shorts: Ed Salinger candid moments with dementia

Posted by justbill123 @justbill123, Jun 6 11:43am

On my down time I like to zone in front of the computer watching you tube shorts. I call it short attention span theater. It is 30 to 90 second videos on every topic you can think of. Lately there is this family that brought their father with dementia home to live with them and they are video documenting the experience. I find watching their interactions very therapeutic. You would think living with dementia why would I want to watch it. I find it very therapeutic and I think for the same reason I lurk at these chat rooms. I am learning from other peoples experience. The father exhibits all the familiar symptoms of dementia, and the families response is very familiar as well. Sometime I don't like how they handle something he has done or said but we learn how to do things right by watching other people make mistakes.

You reminded me of a psych experiment in the 40s where people were denied enough food to maintain their weight for several months. The study was trying to figure out how to handle the needs of the starving populations at the end of the war.
The participants focused on food. ..thinking about it, looking at it, dreaming about it, etc. You'd imagine they'd try to get their minds off of food, but it was the only thing that really interested them.
I guess that's just how we're wired. We focus on the need of the moment. Pretty adaptive, when you think about it.
Also, zoning out helps, too. We can't be "on" all the time even if that's what needs to happen. A little downtime is healthy (that's my 2 cents anyway).

Bill — Thanks for the post on the demential shorts. Agree they can be helpful.

When you get a moment can you post a link to any of the vids you've seen? Tried to locate one, and didn't in a couple of minutes. Thank you.
