Will hiatal hernia surgery allow me to run again?
I’ve had a hiatal hernia for over 6 years. When I run, pressure is added to my upper body making it difficult to breathe. Because of it, I don’t run. Is there anyone who has experienced getting surgery and attempting to run once fully healed? I know it’s different from person to person.

While you wait for someone to answer your question, here is a question for you: have you done diaphragmatic breathing exercises? If not, you can google for examples of exercises that help strengthen the diaphragm. It may help enough to get you back to running. https://refluxsummit.com/daily-10-minute-routines-to-prevent-reflux-from-a-hiatal-hernia/ Just one example of a web page that may help you.
@baguette do you need to join to get this info? I chose to go directly to reflux summit and they wanted my info.
@sylvermoon8 At this point you have to join. I thought the free synopsis might be helpful. It seems like the reflux summit runs a free multi-day online conference each year, and if you want access to the information after the conference ends you pay for it. You can google on the internet or youtube and find a ton of people giving instructions on diaphragmatic breathing. Here is one from UCLA: https://www.youtube.com/watch You can google for more examples. I did read somewhere that high impact running wasn't recommended for running but I think if you work at building up your diaphragm and LES you might be able to swing it. There is a device in Europe called Iqoro that helps with hiatal hernia/LES issues. Can't get it here. I bought a mouthguard with a strap and did the Iqoro exercises using that. Cost $10. You can find the Iqoro exercise on its web site.
