Can't keep food down. Why does doctor seem unconcerned?

Posted by burtondanielle @burtondanielle, Nov 6 3:20pm

So I saw my Gastro 2 weeks ago and told him I couldn't hold down food. I can drink fluids and hold them down / intake very slowly.
2 years ago I had a total Colectomy W/ Jpouch
Just a little background.
Anyways. He ordered a gastric empty test and showed these results. 93 % at 1 hour (normal 30- 90%)
66 % at 2 hours (normal < 60%)
40 % at 3 hours (normal < 30%)
17 % at 4 hours (normal < 10%)

But he doesn't seem concerned " Nurse called and told me he wanted to discuss at my next appointment which is 2 weeks away. ? So I'm the meantime No medication to help? No diet restrictions? No medical advice at all?
This test indicates gastroparosis . Am I wrong ? Am I missing something. I just want to make sure I am in the right before making a big deal of something.

You definitely have to be your OWN health care advocate. My husband’s doctor wasn’t concerned ( but I WAS,) about my husbands scans and elevated cancer markers and I had to INSIST on a Pet Scan rather than the CT Scans he had been sending him for. Got the awful news last week that his cancer appears to have metastasized to his liver and he has 6 months to live. I should not have ASKED for the Pet Scan at our prior visits, I should have insisted! You do whatever you need to do to MAKE your doctor seem concerned!!

Do you have diabetes or are you prediabetic? Have you ever been tested for small fiber neuropathy via a skin punch biopsy? Small fiber neuropathy can affect your skin sensations but also your autonomic nervous system which affects digestion.

What was the reason you needed a total colectomy w/jpouch?

(Cee) that's my name on here I just set my account back up. I'm going through the same thing I've had 3 bowel movements in 3 weeks. ive been s the struggling since June. I can't hold food down either and I'm having so much pain that I passed out from it. Black stool. My insides are so sore I know I'm close to a perferation. I have an outlet disfunction and I've had paralictic ileus twice that I know of. My gastro Dr doesn't care shes worried about a fissure I have coming out of me, I'm like I don't care about that at all I'm going to die if I don't get some of this stool out??? Who cares about a fissure at that point.

@cpeffer - have you gotten a second opinion on your situation from another gastroenterologist or your primary care provider?

@cpeffer So sorry for your suffering…seems that you need a doctor sooner rather than later…if it’s a blockage, it may need immediate care before it gets worse..time could be of the essence…at least that’s my experience for what it’s worth. Best of luck !

@cpeffer I have autoimmune Illeitis attacks because of inflammation which causes waste evacuation issues. Read an AMA Journal article on the benefits of drinking Black Tea daily (tannic acid) to combat the inflammation and keep it from impeding its function.

Not being able to keep food down for a length of time is already a big deal.. if needed, put pressure on doc to help, sooner rather than later ! be your own best advocate ! Best of luck !
