Why aren't my Dr's looking for cause?

Posted by mmskfs @mmskfs, 6 days ago

It seems my Dr's are ok with treating my low platelet count; hospital stays abd transfusions, but not concerned about cause. How can I best advocate for myself? This is new for me. 2nd low platelet count in 2 weeks. Last experience about 18 months ago.

mmsksf,
I would start with the primary care. If you have a messaging system tell them you would like to be tested for cause and ask what testing had been done at the hospital. You might also get copy of your hospital labs. I'd be surprised if they hadn't done a CBC and a blood smear.
Your natural platelets only last about 5 to 7 days, donor platelets 2 to 3 days. Fever or infection can shorten that time.
It's hard to guess why you are being followed, but it is wise to look for cause, especially with a second episode so long after the first.
Your doctor may refer you to a hematologist is basic tests don't uncover the reason for your low count.
Let us know how this progresses. I don't think your primary will be reluctant to help.
