I find difficulty to expel continually accumulating mucus coming from my lungs to throat. I have no other symptoms like fever, cough, chest pain etc , pls help me i am losing hope

@adam11133– Hi Adam and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Let me ask a few questions first off to see if I can help. Did you go to a doctor and what did he say? Are you sure that the phlegm is coming from your lungs and not just your sinuses?

@adam11133– I know that this is scary and frustrating. I have constant mucus in my throat and in order to dilute it I drink a lot of water. Have you had any blood work done to make sure that it isn't an infection?

Pls suggest me blood tests for lung infections , thankyou for helping me

Please tell us, in general terms, a little more about yourself and your overall health. Any symptom that persists for 8 months is concerning, but sometimes causes are extremely difficult to track down. Especially, can you think of any changes in your life dating back to that time – a move, new pet, new job, etc.

I am suffering from lot of white mucus coming from my lungs , and also not able to cough it out. And i also have runny nose but i don't have fever and other symptoms but from previous month facing have sharp pain in lungs but after taking antibiotics pain is gone but mucus remains the same ,
Pls tell me about lab test for mac and how long it takes to recover if i have mac pulmonary infection ,
Thankyou

I think it may be premature to jump to a discussion of MAC, especially if a single course of antibiotics helped, and because a runny nose is not necessarily characteristic. It could still possibly be many other things including sinusitis, allergies, and other lung infections.

As step one I would recommend consulting a pulmonologist to have a complete health history, lung x-rays, and if indicated a CT scan. If these indicate infection, the doc will possibly order a mucus specimen. This test is sent to a special lab for culturing, and takes 4-6 weeks to see if there is MAC, then further testing to determine what drugs will be effective. The course of treatment is 1.5 years or longer.

Six years ago I was horribly sick for months. Cough off the charts. Changed doctors 3 times. Said it could be acid reflux. Sent me for allergy screening and said I was allergic to maple leaves. It was January and minus 20 degrees! I said no! I'm throwing up from coughing! Never had allergies! I was sent for 3 X-rays. Nothing. It was after the 3rd that I heard two hospital nurses chatting about how bad the pertussis outbreak was. Went home and googled. Guess what- adult pertussis doesn't necessarily show on an X-ray. Finally taken seriously when it was discovered by a CT scan that my lungs were filled. Unfortunately by the time the bronchoscopy was performed was too late to culture the mucous as I had been on Levaquin for a week. Diagnosis was bronchiectasis. Never smoked. It was acquired. They give you a tube thing so when you cough up a mucous plug you have 30+ minutes to get it to the lab. Yeah. That works real well if its the middle of the night or a weekend. I had anger issues for a long time that had they taken this previously healthy person seriously things would have gone smoother. Well now my lung doctor died in the middle of this pandemic and I have a new pulmonologist who I haven't seen yet in person. My advice? Listen to your inner voice. Is this totally new? Did it just come out of nowhere? Do you suspect they may be wrong? Demand the tests and procedures you deserve and don't let them give you the run around.

Hi – 18 yrs ago I inhaled a poisonous gas while at work at was diagnosed with asthma – I was put on wixela twice a day and albuteral as my rescue inhaler. Something happened the beginning of this year – shortness of breathe and coughing. Went to Urgicare once and ER twice (ER dr told me to eat toast). I have seen so many specialists – gone through so many tests and bloodwork and there were days I was ready to give up. Good news is that all the tests and bloodwork came back good – which didn't leave me with an answer. I finally saw a Bronchestasis Dr who looked at my chart and said that he could not see any abnormalities which would cause what I have. He told me to stop the wixela and exercise. He gave me hope and I am thankful to God for leading me to him. I am going to follow his plan – then go back and see him in a month. He said that he want to see me lead a good life. There is a doctor out there for you – just keep searching

@gaylesunflower1– I'm a rebel and I hope that you told the doctor that you would rather he eat the toast. I hope that your new doctor is leading you on the right path. Please keep us updated.

Can you tell us what exercises you are going to do? Are there any for just the lungs?
