What treatments seem best for spasms after last BCG treatments?

Posted by sanm86 @sanm86, Jan 7 8:03am

I have had the initial BCG treatments (6) followed by a cycle of three and three more before being cleared of no cancer in the lining. I was prescribed oxybutynin ( two months supply) for spasm. However, this has not worked for me. I will check with my urologist now but please share experiences on what has worked for you.

Hello - I am so sorry for your difficulties. Here was our experience - My husband suffered a severe reaction/infection to BCG in December 2024 called BCG Induced Cystitis. It started out as spasms, urgency and frequency that continued to worsen. The urologist did the same thing and prescribed him oxybutynin which did absolutely nothing. And then tried to give him a myriad of other prescriptions that were useless as well. He has spent the last year undergoing treatment for that infection and has finally been cleared as of 2 weeks ago. When symptoms from BCG treatments become too severe it can be a BCG hypersensitivity which is an immune overreaction to the BCG. Some of the reactions are mild and others are severe. Please research BCG hypersensitivity and BCG induced cystitis. My husband also did a video about his experience if you'd like to see it - here is the link https://youtu.be/vVkbWDFFiTc

Thank you for your timely reply. I am glad to hear that your husband's infection has finally cleared. I will be researching BCG hypersensitivity as well. The video was excellent because it gives us an opportunity for informed discussions with our doctors about the treatment options. God Bless you!

Took oxybutyin for severe bladder spasms after my 3rd BCG treatment. Worked that time. It was 5mg 24 hr time released but alleviated my spasms shortly after taking it. Was told to take one an hour before each treatment; however,I had them again this time just not quite so severe. Took 2 Advil and helped. Found that this medication comes in different strengths and in short term doses. Going to ask my dr. for a higher short term dosage b fire treatments and one or two to take after on treatment days.

Hi sanm86; I had serious bladder spasms as well and was prescribed Oxybutynin which worked very well. There are other drugs that can work to stop spasms. Checking with your urologist for an alternative is the smart solution.
