The Diabetes Trial net collaboration screens family members of people with Type 1 diabetes for autoantibodies. Those who are positive do have genetic testing done and there are intervention studies to try to prevent Type 1 and reverse the loss of insulin production in newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes. There are "cures" for type 2 diabetes. In early stages it involves physical activity and diet with moderate weight loss. Several trials have shown reductions in the progression to diabetes or regression from diabetes. Similarly, an important % of patients with diabetes and severe obesity resolve or markedly reduce their needs for diabetes medicines after bariatric surgery. Type 2 diabetes is not to our knowledge a single gene disease, so silver bullet cures are unlikely.
