Weight Loss

Posted by deanh @deanh, Sep 7, 2025

I started the 3 antibiotics in May after feeling poorly and testing positive for MAC in March. I have lost aprox. 15 percent( 20 pounds)of my body weight since diagnosis. My last 2 sputum test have come back negative, but continue to cough a lot and feeling fatigued. I am still on antibiotics
How normal is the weight loss?
Thanks for any input Dean H

I have been drinking pineapple juice because thought was good for lung health.
I take a PPI for ulcers probably caused by baby aspirin.
Does reflux cause ulcers or vice-versa?
Or two different things?

Shelia - Are you following the suggested fruits and other food items to stay away from due to acid reflux? Do you have acid reflux...I think that is what you are saying and taking the PPI as well.
How long have you been on the PPI?

I was underweight to to start 108lbs.
After bad reactions to Ciprofloxacin dropped to 92lbs
Regained to 105lbs until clofazimine did something to me starting with foaming urine and some kind of malabsorption issue.
Currently at 82lbs and still dropping probably because of this- Clofazimine Enteropathy.

Esophagus erosions.
Found during an endoscopy.
My doctor took me off the baby aspirin and prescribed omeprazole.
My cardiologist wants me back on the aspirin.
I haven't started taking again.
I'm upset because I kept telling my doctor that at night I would get stomach pain above my belly button.
He assured me the low dose wouldn't cause problems.
Yep.
I started drinking pineapple juice after watching a video where the respiratory therapist said pineapple juice and mullen tea would help lung health.

I think I still have gerd.
Diagnosed many years ago.
I thought the pineapple juice during the morning would be okay.
I'm going to pull out my Acid Watcher book and just put a shopping list on my phone.

I found this PowerPoint by Michelle McDonald of NJH. A few years old but the info is still up to date. Hope it's helpful.

This year‘s conference just happened. Their info on weight restoration is really helpful. The speaker stresses forcing oneself to eat as much as possible and as healthy as possible!
All of the speakers have great advice.

Unfortunately, because I am a new member here I’m not allowed to post links. You can find the videos from the conference by searching on YouTube for:
NTM & Bronchiectasis: Patient & Family Conference (September 13, 2025)
Below the video, each speaker has a link to their speech. The one for weight restoration addresses this problem.
Good luck! It’s an ongoing battle!

I am sure she meant as much as possible while giving considering to those with Acid Reflux....It is advisable to eat small meals and often.
"Eating smaller, more frequent meals helps with acid reflux by reducing the pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and preventing your stomach contents from washing back into the esophagus. Large meals distend the stomach, forcing the LES to open, while smaller meals keep the stomach from expanding, which helps keep this valve closed and minimizes symptoms"
One also, with Acid Reflux, might consider avoiding certain foods.
Yes, eating healthy helps a great deal...it keeps the immune system in better condition...etc. etc.
You are so right..."Its' an ongoing battle!"
