Recurring UTIs and tamoxifen: What can I do?

Posted by monigue @monigue, Jan 24, 2022

UTI was my chronic ongoing problem for years and some antibiotics could help.
After breast cancer surgery, last year I was taking Tamoxifen hormone therapy for 4 months. Since January this year I have very bad UTI , talked to oncologist ,
he recommend to stop Tamoxifen
for a month and than started gradually .
Its time to start Tamoxifen, but I couldn’t rid off UTI symptoms. Antibiotics don’t help, or even make it worse .Two question at once ? UTI & Tamoxifen ?

@monigue I am sorry you are going through this. Did your doctor have any suggestions knowing the one month break didn't resolve your issues?

I never had more UTI with Tamoxifen, but I have had a history with this issue for what seems like forever. I know you like non pharma solutions and I might have one you can try. I take a cranberry supplement daily. The highest amount of fruit concentrate I can find at the store. I started doing this after a particularly bad bout with a resistant UTI about 3 years ago. I certainly won’t hesitate to go get antibiotics if I need them but I haven’t needed them in 3 years and for me that has got to be a record. I do find taking it at night causes less stomach acid, but the acidic environment in the bladder is less friendly to UTI causing bacteria.
Have you ever tried the cranberry juice binge to help UTI symptoms? Have you tried any other complimentary treatments like urva ursi tea?

Chris, I went over the description for use UVA-Ursi. Would it help in prevention bladder and kidney from infection, that come from urine track if antibiotic isn’t working .
Sims this supplement for variety of more severe conditions.
Of course , worth to try,
Because of my arrhythmia I tried to consume as less as possible supplements .

UVA URSI is not acidic. I, like you, have fought this particular problem, I was even prescribed macrodantin daily for years back before they really considered antibiotic resistance. When I was a teenager and too poor to keep going to the doctor, and cranberry juice became too acidic for my stomach I started drinking the uva ursi tea. Then I could only find it in powder so I would mix it in the boiling water (resembled a nasty swamp) and down the hatch it went because it helped. Leaves are definitely better. Lol
The cranberry supplement is just fruit and it does not seem to upset my stomach if I take it at night.
Maybe some other folks will have some other ideas too.

Chris, Thanks again! Apparently. UVA-URSI is the same as grass called Toloknianka , that I was looking for lately . So your post was right at time.Thank you
I’ve learned that in the post menopausal women the vaginal resistance to infections gets much weaker, plus now Tamoxifen have its additional effect, which
I stoped for a month , as oncologist recommended , and I need to start again.
I saw on Amazon UVA/Ursi in package. Will definitely try !!
I need to keep UTI at bay!! LOL

I don’t think the doctors today are really care . I’ve asked, and he has replayed this way! But I believe we have to be our own doctors based on the tests and on the variety of info we can collect and adjust for our body. Going by protocol sometimes is harmful!!!
Tamoxifen is for 5 years, and i believe the interruption for a month will not do more harm to me, than already is !!
Tamoxifen is always going to be subject for UTI in my case. So, I should take care of it to prevent more internal problems.

Chris. got my order of UVI-URVIS . Wander how often did you take?
I have read it is toxics, and not recommend to take for more than 5 days. and/or 7 days a year. Than it isn’t much help if Tamoxifen wiped out estrogen. What a delema!

Good thing I never read that. “Choke” I was drinking the swamp water almost constantly for close to a year. Please do not do that!! Maybe you could alternate using this and other remedies.
I wish there was a magic bullet for this, but alas I fear this is a fight for the ages. Almost every woman I know well enough to discuss this has had multiple infections or a steady problem with them. My own mother died from a resistant bacteria that was a UTI , introduced by a catheter. She was in the hospital for a procedure on her leg. I am not telling you this to frighten you this was a specific case, but to explain that in my humble opinion, all women will continue to have this problem until there is a better solution to prevention.
I am lucky enough to be able to tolerate the cranberry supplement, although the cranberry juice is too acidic in my stomach. I believe the pill doesn’t dissolve in the stomach or not fast enough to cause me discomfort.
Have you ever seen a urologist about this?

REPLY

Chris, I much aware. about catheterizing and many others reasons I always tried to avoid it with my late mother and with my late husband. I agree that the age is bigger issue for everything , including arrhythmia and UTI that i am suffering for years and breast cancer now .
Therefore, I need waiving in between diseases.
Yes, i saw Urologist. But disagree to do cyctography than .
Now, when cancer hormonal therapy has added, perhaps I should see him again .
Thanks for advice
