Using the toilet following a TKR

Were you (female) able to manage by yourself using the toilet the first few days following TKR? Any tips to make it easier?

I had knee replacement last April. You’re going to need at least a grab bar near the toilet. My husband went to the medical supply near us & found a frame that sits behind the toilet with arms on both sides to help you push up & off the toilet. We’d already gotten a seat riser, so that helped, too. You can do this even through the pain - I’m 78 with cerebral palsy & have done fine! You do need to keep with the PT & home exercises or your knee will stay stiff. Good luck - praying for you!

Hi Davidova,
Not claiming to be an expert by any means. I did both in 2025. I learned so much in the first one but misunderstood about bending. When I had the second surgery I asked the surgeon about bending. He said by all means you can bend! I admit the traditional height toilet is tough, chair height is doable and your PT will be working on that mobility right away so if you have chair height I encourage you to bend that knee and stand like you always have! I was afraid at first but was encouraged by the accomplishment. I really struggled with the traditional height and would push off how ever I could, even the seat between my knees. I encourage you to have your walker if nothing else to give you that leverage.

I didn't want to raise the seat so I got a support that let me lower myself and raise myself from the normal height of the toilet:

@steveinarizona I bought one of these with my TKR several years ago and still use it today. It helps with my 82 year old body and makes it much easier to sit down or get up.

I found that I didn't use the chair riser the hospital sent home with me but a couple of days, maybe a total of 3 times. But I had a cabinet next to the commode that helped me. Do whatever is comfortable and makes you feel safe getting up and down off the toilet. Good luck!

@johnbishop

You beat me. I am an 80 YO (almost 81) male but I also have kept it even though I don't really need it anymore.

I did put some rubber bumpers on the front rail to protect my morning toes from hitting it.

I got a raised seat with arm handles. Made it so easy to get up and down. Will keep it to use anyway with my other sore knee and hips.
