Using Telemedicine for Cardiologist

Posted by bitsygirl @bitsygirl, Feb 19 10:25am

I live in a remote area and there is only one cardiologist. He doesn't seem to be prevention minded, but I am. The next closest cardiologist would be a two hour drive. That is doable, but I am considering whether telemedicine is an option. Has anyone used a remote cardiologist? How did you make the switch? What has been your experience? I know there will be some insurance considerations to pin down. Thanks in advance.

@bitsygirl You bring up an interesting question about remote cardiology visits and are proactive to focus on prevention.

I have had a couple virtual visits with a cardiologist but it was at a time that I did not need a physical exam or testing. These appointments were not early on establishing care or at times I need to get bloodwork requiring a physical visit.

It may help if you are comfortable to share a bit of why you need to see a cardiologist so others have a better idea how to comment.

Are you still looking at a heart surgery? What are your concerns that are not getting addressed?

@jlharsh Thanks for your response. I had a good initial workup and I think I have a great picture of my status. I have a high CAC score, high lp(a) and a family history of premature heart disease. My high CAC wouldn't seem to be an obvious result of my lifestyle. (In fact, my PCP never really mentioned statins or additional testing despite the family history because everything looked good.)

My concerns are about long-term management. I guess it's not helpful to go into details. What I'm looking for is someone that is more proactive regarding monitoring those factors that are known to increase risk and someone that believes in shared decision making. I'm wary given how bad my situation seemed to get despite getting my yearly checkups. I feel like I need to understand the decisions that are being made (if only for my mental health) and I think there are things that can be done to avoid an MI or intervention that aren't. I'm not getting those things in my current situation.

It's worth a try if you are seeking advice on long term management of your condition. You said you have had an exam with tests so I would consider giving the video visit a try. I have used them for non emergent issue such as medication advice and review of test and lab results. Good luck.
