Transplant Culinary Arts - Zoom Sessions

Transplant Recipient Culinary Arts

To our fellow Connect friends:

We are initiating a unique and fun zoom gathering for recent transplant recipients and longer term recipients (solid organ and stem cell) on Mayo Connect to share healthy and delicious recipes and important food safety tips. Each of us has individual food limitations and nutritional concerns and we plan to address our issues together—up close and personal—zooming of course!

We plan to meet once a month with the presentation of a recipe and discussion of ingredients, tips along the way, and sharing. We hope many of you are willing to share your favorite and best dishes and also co-host one or more of the zoom sessions. You can of course just join us and participate in the discussion or listen! You do not have to join with your video on in order to see the presentation and listen/participate in the discussion. Each program will run 45 minutes to one hour and we will announce our next meeting each time we meet.

You can sign up by contacting either Athena @athenalee or Ellen at @estrada53. Your identification will be kept secure. As you sign up, please also let us know a day/time preference for our gatherings:
Weeknight? Tuesday or Thursday 4 pm or 5 pm (west coast) / 6 pm or 7 pm (central) / 7 pm or 8 pm (east coast)
Saturday? Suggest times

For those who are unfamiliar with how Zoom works, there will be an introduction to the use of the zoom elements at the beginning of our program.

Some ideas for presentation are:
Favorite healthy recipes – Cook along with one of the hosts!
What to avoid with our individual medications
Potential health concerns with food preparation and cooking
Herbal and spice interactions
How our bodies have changed in reaction to foods – taste changes
Other health issues that affect our eating habit
Renal impairment
Osteoporosis
Cholesterol
Weight gain or loss
Autoimmune diseases
Diabetes
Aging
Any others not listed here that are of concern

Disclaimer: We are patients, not medical practitioners. Our recipes fit our dietary needs and tastes, we hope they will fit yours and your tastes, but some may not. Our tips are researched. However, if you are unsure if you should eat certain ingredients or follow our tips, please check with your transplant team prior to trying the recipe.

Hey @athenalee and @estrada53, I'm so excited to see that you guys are making this happen – an idea that was born out of this discussion https://connect.mayoclinic.org/comment/626185/.

I think @hello1234 was also interested in joining you as are others in the Transplant group.

Yes, please sign me up for the Zoom meeting. 🙂 I am retired in Florida so during the day should work fine. By the way, I am an awful cook so I definitely will not be a teacher…I will be there to enthisiastically learn about food and recipe ideas. Thank you!

You bet @hello1234! I hoped you’d join. We’re really looking forward to sharing recipes and tips that everyone participating can offer.

If this will be a cooking event, can we get a list of ingredients before the webinar?

@athenalee and @estrada53, I see that next week will be the first Zoom session!
In my opinion, this is perfect timing as we transition from summer to the fall/winter season. I don't like to cook – that is a fact! However as the weather cools, I find myself more interested in being in the kitchen.
Can I join if I can only participate/view occasionally?

Are you going to give us a preview of what you are planning for the Thursday, Oct 7 Session?

Hey Rosemary, we welcome people to join as often as they are inclined. I enjoy cooking some, but certainly not everyday. For one thing, I work and have ongoing medical appointments. So, like many, limited time. It works for me to cook up something on the weekend that I can adapt during the week. And, quick, healthy unprocessed meals to fill in. I plan on sharing some of these easier, quick meals during our webinars.

I’m also looking forward to just discussing food, diet, and health with other transplant recipients…especially as we continue to be isolated during the ongoing pandemic

We’ll be posting the recipe for next week’s webinar soon.

@athenalee I hope to come next week but I may not be able to. I do have that other zoom on Tuesday – actually two zooms, one at noon and another in the evening – plus my daughter is planning to visit and she may stay the whole week. If she is here I will probably not want to miss having dinner together. I don't get to see her and her husband nearly enough since she moved from NYC to Philadelphia.
