TKR 01/12/26
Keeping spirits up and patience is for the gifted. I think with TKR you have good days and not so much good days. Ai says I’m on target, doing well, sending me little hearts. But today in PT one of my therapists said “you must have a low pain tolerance.” Because I still can’t bend to 100-120 I’m at 90. I sit, walk w/o cane, get in/out of car, starting to climb stairs slowly etc. The challenge is with swelling which contributes to not bringing my leg back. It’s so painful and actually a vicious circle. I’m off hard pain pills. They make me nauseous so just Tylenol and Ibuprofen. I’m a little in awe, this therapist would say “you have a low pain tolerance” when I just walked out of surgery almost 4 weeks ago, anyway I guess I did..don’t remember too much, Lol 🙂

Annanana,
you may have low pain tolerance compared to patients on opioids.
You aren't behind the target of 100 to 120 degrees at 4 week, yet. We haven't even passed Valentines Day,
or were you just going to skip that this year. Not sure about your sense of time passing, but your sense of humor remains strong. I hope you'll recover range soon and post us.

3 ReactionsYou have an ahole for a therapist. If you are permitted by your insurance, find a new one. You are doing fine under the circumstances and he is a jerk.

2 ReactionsYou are doing phenomenal! Your PT is out of line and should never say something like that. It's very discouraging. I am 18 months post-TKR and still have pain issues. That you are only taking Tylenol and no pain medications is a testament to your pain tolerance. Keep on a regular schedule with your ice, as that truly is the best thing for swelling. Onward and upward.

4 ReactionsI agree. Your PT is out of line. If it continues complain to someone. Maybe you can get reassigned to another PT. At one month from surgery I was using pain tablets also. Icing is really important.

3 ReactionsThank you for your support💝 I had a nice talk with my spouse. He told me something that resonates. When you first get called in a clinic, PT or wherever you’re at and the nurse, PT or whomever asks how you’re doing? They’re not just being friendly. That is my time to be open and in control of me. Not adversarial by any means but insightful.
“Low Pain Tolerance?” Oh Honey, if you only knew to walk in my moccasins.”
May each step, each day be better.

2 ReactionsYou are actually ahead of schedule! I didn’t reach 120 until six weeks, and am now at three months and still have some pain, swelling and numbness. My surgeon keeps telling e it takes six months to a year. Hang in there!

1 ReactionI agree with the comments in this string about the therapist…he/she has to go. I also was not able to take opioids and Ibuprofin and Tylenol was useless. I had nerve pain that was extreme for 8 weeks but 16 weeks out i started riding my bike …i am 81. BTW, swelling will impact your ROM. Work on the swelling the the ROM should improve.

2 Reactions@aileenredding So true! To add to your thoughts, I might suggest doing some PT exercises at home. And omg, it hasn't even been four weeks for her yet.

1 ReactionPer”l my PT and “low pain tolerance.” I’m grateful yesterday (Feb 8) a breakthrough, I came around full circle on my recumbent bike. Yea! I did have to push it but not through pain like my PT’s theory. I sort of manipulated/massaged my knee to bend through the stiffness to come around on my bike. Wasn’t painful just stiff, I’d did it. Have to admit, it took a little courage - Lol
I wish you all ❤️🩹 healing and pray for all of us, our best life back again. “I hope you Dance”

2 Reactions@paulsk My ROM was good at 4 weeks but nerve pain was extreme. My ROM was very good going into surgery and i credit my cycling for that.
