tight upper ab and LPR (acid reflux in throat)... related?

Posted by @smorford in Digestive Health, Dec 2, 2012

I've had tightness in upper middle abdomen for about a year- feels like a belt around my upper abomen and someone is pulling it tight (worse at night). My physican immediately said gallbladder but two gastroenterologists independently said they didn't think the symptoms were gallbladder related. Endoscopy found some evidence of acid reflux and a week after endoscopy (coincidence?), I noticed relux symptoms in my throat- globus sensation and inflamed mucus membranes which ENT doc agreed was LPR. I have had CT scan, ultrasound, HIDA scan, endocsopy.... still no conclusive diagnosis. Next week trip to allergist to see about food allergies. I wonder if the feeling of the lump in my upper abdomen is related to the acid reflux or just coincidental?
Anyone else have this?

I have had GERD for about 3 years and have been on and off medications. My symptoms are very similar to yours, squeezing tightness in the chest, feeling of a lump in the throat, sore throat, and worse, I symptoms are prominent when I wake up in the morning. I raised the head with bed wedges, eat small meals, eat slower, avoid acidic foods, and go to sleep with empty stomach. It's a long fight and it's hard to treat. I have very good doctors from Weill Cornell. Talk with your GI doctor again. Upper GI test definitely helps. Life style changes are very important. If your doctor ruled out stomach ulcer or heart condition, it might be GERD or LPRD (Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease). Feel well.
