The Latest Word from Dr Honda on Sterilizing & Boiling

Posted by Sue, Volunteer Mentor @sueinmn, Sep 19 4:34pm

Presented today at the NJH NTM & Bronchiectasis: Patient & Family Conference!

Boiling tap water at a rolling boil for 5 minutes is plenty - tested in 10 labs across the country in January & June, at a variety of elevations. The water remains sterile at room temperature for up to 2 weeks in sanitized containers. Tap water was inoculated with multiple strains of NTM. (By 3 minutes all bacteria was gone, except M xenopii took 5 minutes.)

Boiling, the microwave sterilizers, baby bottle sterilizers, and travel pots - ALL WORK!

Purified spring water is safest. Some bottled waters contain varying levels of NTM, but none were MAC or Abscessus - they were the ones considered not to be human infection risks.

There is more about cleaning showerheads & household disinfectants, but I don't have time to cover it now.

The bottom line - we don't need to worry so much...

The slide deck is too large to download, I will work on it later.

AMEN. Thank you, Sue!

"Purified spring water" is bound to cause confusion.....not sure I have ever seen it before. Spring water, yes. Purified water, yes.

Will the presentation be posted somewhere do you know? Maybe not, if it was a pay per view.

@scoop The videos will be publicly posted eventually, but to those who paid they will be online in a week or two. We will be sure to keep everyone informed.
I plan to distill information from the presenters' slides as I have time over the next few days. Pretty sure other participants will do the same.

Linda Esposito is usually very helpful about sharing information from these presentations and often posts it here.

Dr Honda was really good. It was the first time I was hearing of her and of any of these tips, including the suggestion that we should be drinking, sterilized, water or boiling shower heads etc.
Does anybody have any tips on how they sterilize their drinking water? Do you fill up water bottles and use the baby bottle sterilizer? I purchased one last night, but it doesn’t seem big enough.. I would appreciate anybody’s practical tips. Thank you!

@scoop The whole bottled water discussion was a little confusing (they were short on time and Dr. Honda moved through the information very quickly) but bottom line, as Sue mentions, none of the various types of bottled water, including non-spring sources which are so common now, tested positive for pathogenic NTM strains, per Dr. Honda. I do believe the NJH patient presentations are eventually broken down by topic and posted on You Tube.

@nanaa85co I don’t sterilize but I have a shower head filter (handheld) so I fill my pitcher with that.

@nanaa85co this topic has been covered extensively in prior posts. Do a topic search and I am confident you will find plenty of discussion. One thing I will say from personal experience, a baby bottle sterilizer was life changing for me (my brand has been discontinued, but again lots of prior discussions on subject). I also got point of use filters for my kitchen sink, bathroom sink and shower. Took me a while, they are not cheap, but once I got them I thought “wow, I should have done this day one!” Good luck!

@bayarea58
What's created the stir, I think, is that there was a very recent webinar update from Dr. Honda and associates reporting new findings for sterilizing nebulizers and for drinking water. This information *might* supersede prior posts. Unfortunately, I missed the webinar.

@nanaa85co How (or whether) to sterilize drinking water is an individual decision.
I choose to use a 0.2 micron filter water setup at my kitchen tap in place of boiling; I carry that water with me around home and in my car, and use bottled spring water other times. BUT, I do not have any evidence of GERD, so am not fanatical about it. I drink brewed tea/coffee/mixed beverages away from home - it has worked for me for over 8 years with no reinfection.

I do use my filtered water for washing/rinsing equipment, fruit, vegetables, etc. I use distilled water to boil my equipment to sterilize it (it doesn't leave mineral deposits on stuff.) Here is a description of the filter system we customized, and have used for years:
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/possible-new-diagnosis/
If you choose to boil water for
washing equipment and drinking, bring it to a roiling boil in a pot or kettle, boil 5 minutes, then pour it into sanitized containers and cap them. Water remains safe for at least 2 weeks based on Dr Honda's tests that were reported yesterday at the conference.

You do NOT need to preboil the water that will be used to sterilize your equipment in a steamer, baby bottle sterilizer, or pan - the process will kill any bacteria.
