Sudden knee pain and catching

Posted by spookyookyeepy @spookyookyeepy, Jul 26 12:57am

As a teen I've danced for a long while and had an injury and surgery on the opposite knee of the one concerning me. Recently I had some catching before, during, and after a class. The next day it hurt and continued catching. I was walking around pretty stiffly for the day, and had to miss class same day and the one after that due to the catching. It has been improving but as I am just.. moving around in bed it feels like the knee is catching pretty painfully as well as some sharp pain. Should I ask my parent to visit a doctor/ specialist? They've been just doing home remedies because there's been no swelling & it looks fine on the outside despite there being pain and issues squatting/bending the knee smoothly.

Sounds like you know there’s a problem and have been trying to take care of it with home remedies. If that doesn’t work in 7-10 days you may need to take the next step and have your primary care physician (PCP) order an x-ray.

Also sounds like since you’ve had an injury and surgery on your other knee, you know what symptoms to look for with your current knee problem.

When I started having knee problems June 2025 I thought it was my sciatic nerve pain going down my leg. But after 8 months having difficulty walking without a walker, I went to PCP for a knee x-ray and it showed a meniscus tear and a piece of cartilage was floating around in knee causing it to snap and catch. Orthopedic surgeon did arthroscopic surgery this past February and now I’m finally walking again.

I hope you can find answers to your current knee problem.

spooky, it sound like you may have torn. Catching or clicking in the knee is a common sign of a torn meniscus.
If the tear is small and located on the outside of the knee it can heal with rest, ice and maybe otc anti inflammatory medication. It does sound as though your tear is small.
A chiropractor would be able to diagnose a tear by holding your knee during specific movements. They might give you some relief with an adjustment. I find them the best, quickest and least expensive way to find answers.
