Stem Cells for Diabetics (type 2)

Posted by natee @natee, Jan 25, 2018

I'm a Diabetic (2004 diagnosis) I've recently been given a diagnosis with gastroparesis. I heard that mayo is working with stem cells, and i'm wondering how i could look into it since all my current doctors just try to push more and more drugs on me to live with it instead of beating it. I do all i can from eating healthier (Exercise might come back if my hip pains ever go away) But i don't want to be reliant on a bunch of pills or injections right now.

Hello @natee,

You may notice that I moved your question to the Diabetes group. Here is the information that I can offer regarding stem cell treatments at Mayo Clinic:

Regenerative Medicine Consult Service Process

Transplant Call-in Center
844-276-2003

What to expect when you call the number:
- An employee will answer and ask the nature of why you are calling
- Say you are interested to stem cells for osteoarthritis or whichever joint ails you
- The employee will funnel your call to the appropriate coordinators from there
- For joint issues, you will be transferred to PMR (Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation)

Appointment coordinators will ask more specific questions (inclusion and exclusion criteria)
If you meet the criteria:
- You will be asked to send in your records and a doctor will look at it in a case-by-case basis

Important Notes to be Aware of:
- PMR is a busy practice, so wait times may exist but answers will be given
- If a treatment exists in the clinic for a diagnosis (i.e. Leukemia) stem cells are not offered
- Price is out of pocket

Types of stem cell treatments offered are Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) injections and Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections. You can find more specific information on these types of injections here, http://mayocl.in/2AUIoAn.

Hello everyone. I am from India, aged 61 years and visiting USA next month. I would like to take stem cell therapy for treatment of diabetes in USA. Before I go for treatment, I need feed back from those who had this treatment.

Some hospitals are claiming Stem Cell therapy cures T2 diabetes completely. Some doctors say that this treatment is still in research stage only. Has anybody took this treatment? Can i have their feed back please?

Hi @harikishan5. You may notice that I moved your post into this discussion on stem cell therapy for type 2 diabetes in the Diabetes/Endocrine System group (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/diabetes-and-endocrine-problems/)

One of Mayo Clinic's focus area of Regenerative Medicine is in Islet Regeneration. The ultimate goal of the Islet Regeneration Program in the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Mayo Clinic is to develop therapies for the treatment of diabetes through diverse regenerative approaches Learn more here: http://www.mayo.edu/research/centers-programs/center-regenerative-medicine/focus-areas/lung-regeneration

Please note this area of research is still in the very early stages.

It can be really difficult to tell which stem cell therapies and regenerative medicine practices are effective and which institutions are offering evidence-based proven therapies. In fact, recently the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a stern warning against unproven stem cell therapies. The FDA issued these two press statements: https://www.fda.gov/newsevents/newsroom/pressannouncements/ucm573427.htm and https://www.fda.gov/newsevents/newsroom/pressannouncements/ucm573431.htm.

To help people learn more about the proven therapies and the promise of developing therapies, Mayo Clinic offers a free telephone consult service. When you call the consult service, they will tell you about the availability of approved stem cell therapy at Mayo Clinic and elsewhere, and for what conditions. They can also tell you about research studies that are actively recruiting participants. Furthermore, you can add your name to a database to be notified when additional studies and information become available. You can learn more about the Consult Service here http://www.mayo.edu/research/centers-programs/center-regenerative-medicine/patient-care/clinical-services/regenerative-medicine-consult-service.
Or call 1-844-276-2003 to speak with one of our experts.
