Sleep Number helped identify Atrial fibrillation (AFib)
I check our sleep scores every morning. One morning I noticed my wife’s heart rate had dropped considerably from the mid 60s to the mid 40s. I watched this for several days then decided she should see her doctor. She had no symptoms of heart issues. She was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. She was treated and brought back into a normal heart rate 16 months ago. Last week I noticed her heart rate again was much slower than normal. As before I suspected the bed was just detecting the larger beats and missing the minor ones and may indicate A-fib again. We scheduled another EKG to check and it confirmed she was again in A-fib. She was treated again and is back in normal rhythm. Without the sleep number monitoring we would not have caught this either time. It may have saved her life!
Being able to adjust each side of the bed for our personal best sleep comfort and the foot and core heat options has been appreciated.

Hello @retiredminnesotans, Welcome to Connect. Thanks for starting this discussion. Many years ago I had a Sleep Number bed before they had all the bells and whistles that they now have. Ours was only adjustable but didn't have any other features. The new smart bed does sound pretty amazing. I did find a small research study on the technology that was pretty interesting.

It's great that you were able to use the data to detect your wife's A-fib and get treatment quickly and then monitor it to detect a future A-fib episode. Did your wife's A-fib treatment change after the second episode?

3 ReactionsGreat pickup and discovery.
Consider an at home device to check for A fib. My Apple Watch does not give an accurate reading when my pulse is below 50.
I bought a KardioMobile for about 70 dollars and my wife and I both need it from time to time. It travels with us.

4 ReactionsI am happy to see that you two are in synch and that you look after each other so closely. Have either of you been tested for obstructive or central sleep apnea? It was the last test for me when all others were ruled out. I went to an over night sleep lab and had a full polysomnography. That revealed that I have severe OSA. Surprised the heck outta me, but it's being controlled very well by a CPAP machine.

I was a medic in the AF during the Vietnam War so have some medical knowledge. We both worked at Mayo after my military service for several years. The sleepnumber bed we have with the app on our phones can also monitor for sleep apnea but we don't have that.
