Recurrence of Rheumatic Fever?

Posted by @portal in Heart & Blood Health, Dec 4, 2011

I had rheumatic fever when I was 6. Then, when I was 20, I experienced fatigue, hot, swollen and painful joints and muscle spasms (hips, knees, wrists), and also some temporary paralysis of my legs, which I also had with the rheumatic fever. This episode at 20 years of age, lasted about a year, then gradually subsided. At the time it was diagnosed as some type of arthritis. When I was 40, I again had swollen, painful joints and fatigue, and spent a month in bed and a year recuperating. When I was 53, I started to get heart palpitations, extreme fatigue, chest pain, and shortness of breath, and was subsequently dx with atrial fibrillation and chronic fatigue syndrome. I am now wondering if all these episodes are/were connected to the original rheumatic fever illness. The thing that is confusing to me is the temporary paralysis, as I don't find this mentioned in connection with definitions of rheumatic fever. I am now 58 and disabled, and would like to get well again. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

In the early 1950's my mother was diagnosed with rheumatic fever. I now have rheumatoid arthritis. Are they the same? (My mother is deceased.)
