Precancerous cells in the vaginal cuff after a hysterectomy

Posted by irene644 @irene644, May 9 4:24pm

I have had long term HPV for 28 years. In October I had a hysterectomy for cervical cancer where I had my cervix, uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes removed and the top of my vagina. Now I have precancerous cells on the vaginal cuff or in the vagina. I just had a Pap smear which showed precancerous cells on the vaginal cuff which have to be removed. I am so worried!

I am really nervous about these precancerous cells just discovered. The HPV 16 is still there after a hysterectomy to remove cervical cancer . These precancerous cells seem to be in the vaginal cuff! I am worried that they will cause cancer

I had cancer of the vaginal cuff 9 years after my hysterectomy for uterus cancer.
The treatment was radiation and 5 treatments of brachytherapy. What are they doing about the precancerous cells?

Thank you for your response! I really appreciated it although I am sorry about your subsequent cancer. I will be having some kind of treatment soon to “ burn “ away these cancerous cells . I have read of the possibility of cancer down the road - which I dread. I can not get rid of the HPV 16 which is the culprit for all my problems! I did not realize that pre-cancerous cells can occur from the hysterectomy for cervical cancer in October 2025.

What is your current situation? I hope and pray it’s a good prognosis now!
Again thank you for writing me! Any suggestions for me?

In 2009 uterus cancer, no radiation just follow-up appts.
2016 breast cancer, 20017 recurrence in vaginal cuff.
My husband had prostrate cancer 2003, recurrence 2012, lung cancer 2015 and recurrence prostrate 2025.
If you learn anything from the above be PROACTIVE it will save your life. After my uterus cancer I was told because there was only a 1% recurrence that the doctors do not use a speculum, I went to four doctors before I found one who would and found out to her surprise it was in my cuff. I make sure we get ALL our tests. I get a mammogram and an mri of my breasts every year because I have dense breasts but you have to ask I just say I have pains my doctor just orders it for me now.
All my doctors give me whatever I want that’s why I stay with them, I actually don’t need a GP I keep track of all our tests. We both seem to be hanging in there and I consider we are pretty healthy. Just think of your precancerous like when you go to the dermatologist and they burn off precancerous areas. Good luck just stay proactive. X
