Post surgery flare up of PMR

Posted by kaysey @kaysey, Jan 5 7:14am

I am in tremendous pain from a flare up of PMR which was diagnosed at Mayo several years ago. Since treatment with prednisone I have done well until now. The problem: the availability of health care workers in North Iowa means I will have to wait weeks for an appointment and a prescription. It is my opinion that our healthcare system is failing us!

Hello @kaysey, I'm sorry to hear that you are having problems getting an appointment and a prescription to help with your PMR flare. You mentioned the flare up occurred after surgery. Can you call your surgeon and discuss the symptoms and possible get a temporary prescription until you are able to get an appointment?

Good suggestion, but my surgeon simply refers me back to my local clinic

Are you able to setup a video appointment? Do you have a Mayo Clinic patient portal from when you were diagnosed by Mayo Clinic? You might try calling to see if you can make a video appointment which may let you get a prescription or if you have a Mayo patient portal, you might be able to schedule a video appointment or message your original Mayo doctor to see if you can get a temporary prescription.

So sorry to hear that. I am in Canada, and although our healthcare system is pretty much free, it doesn't mean the coverage is great. It took me 5 months to get diagnosed, and finally got Prednisone 2 days ago, which seems to be working very well.

@kaysey. I hope you can get some relief fast. If @johnbishop suggestion regarding video appointment with the Mayo Clinic does not work, is there any Urgent Care Clinic near you, or, last resort, an Emergency Room you can go to? I hope you can get some relief soon. Teri

Because I also got gout at the same time as this flare up of pmr, my kidney doctor prescribed prednisone. This provided some relief until I can get an appointment scheduled. I didn't understand that suggestion was to teleconference with Mayo. I thought he meant with a local doctor. Does Mayo offer telemedicine conferences? I have seen Dr Osborne in the past.

@kaysey Sorry if my post was confusing. I meant that you might be able to call or setup a video appointment, or even send a message using your Mayo Clinic patient portal if you have one setup. Dr. Thomas G. Osborn was my rheumatologist at Mayo Rochester but I haven't seen him since 2007 when he diagnosed my PMR. There is a link on his page to send a secure message via patient portal if you are a patient – https://www.mayoclinic.org/biographies/osborn-thomas-g-m-d/bio-20054469

That's awesome news! He is a great rheumatologist but I'm super happy and hoping I don't need his services anymore 🙂

Are you still taking a low dosage of prednisone or are you pain free without it?

My PMR has been in remission since late 2018 so was able to taper off of prednisone.

That is wonderful to hear! Thank you for your help, but most especially for your compassion! You truly understand….most people don't! And it's so nice to visit with people who know that PMR is not an ailment that is a product of my imagination!
