Polymyalgia Rheumatica

Husband suffered for last year with Polymyalgia rheumatica. He is on 40 mg of prednisone for the last year and has gained about 40 lbs and has become sedentary. He is in constant pain and doesn’t seem to get any better. Any help or suggestions? He’s 65 yrs old and now weights 256 lbs.

Hello, I just joined this board today – seems to be a ghost town here. I had PMR in 2003. Luckily, mine only last 1 year. I was on prednisone for 9 months. 40 mg is a super high dosage. If he isn’t getting pain relief I’d question the diagnosis – get a 2nd opinion. Prednisone increases the appetite hence the weight gain. I hope your husband gets some relief soon.

I was told today by my Rheumatologist that I probably have PMR – I guess I have all the classical clinical symptoms. He has put me on 30 mg of Prednisone for the first 5 days and then 20 mg for the balance of the month. He feels if I haven’t responded positively by then, it’s back to the drawing board. In fact, i should see some serious improvement at the the of 30 mg, five day period.

Both shoulders and arm joints and my corresponding muscles ache terribly, my hips, joints and muscles are the same, and my upper leg muscles and knees ache.

(This all started about 5 months ago.)

I am 66 and have worked out for years – went from lifting two 100lb bar bells to needing both hands to retrieve a quart of milk form the refrigerator. I have been having a difficult time sleeping as I cannot find a comfortable position. I was very active outdoors and now my wife has to help me up from a chair.

I met with five Orthopedists and they wanted to do everything from a back operation to shoulder and hip replacements – these are good doctors, but were at a loss dealing with my symptoms. An orthopedic surgeon suggested I get a review from a Rheumatologist AND here we are today. I took my first 30 mg of Prednisone at 6 pm today – stay tuned – we’ll see what the weekend brings.

hello i have been on prednisone for 11 months, for pmr first put on 40mg by my primary care dr. until i could get to see a rhumatologist, he put me on 20mg i gained 20 lbs, my eyes went blurry, off and on, changed my glasses , became very depressed, laid around for 2 months this winter, no energy no strength no intrest or will to do any thing. short of breath, heart pounds, had to lay down obout every 15 or 20 min. complained to my rhumatologist, said all symptoms were dut to prednisone, she told me to drop a gram a month, or every two weeks, and if i could stand it one a week, i am down to 8mg a day and next week 7 mg no lower than 5 mg. my symptomes slowlely are going away i can go outside and do yard work, every day its a little longer and a little stronger.i was put on a antidepressant and since i have cut back on the prednisone i am feeling much more like my old self , i have a ways to go but i can see the light at the end of the tunnel, 40mg is a really high dose , i would ask my dr about cutting back slowley, it may work for your husband, only under a dr care though,,,,good luck
