PN and trembling/ hands shaking

Posted by stallen @stallen, Feb 4 9:49am

Hi …I've had PN for 9 years. I’ve noticed as it progressed that I have trembling shaky hands and even arms a bit. I also seem to get nervous easier …with anxiety. Does anyone else experience this with their progressing PN? Have the DRS done anything for you? Txs

@stallen, I experience some tremors/shaking in my hands at different times during the day if I'm trying to be careful using a mouse on the computer. I'm pretty sure it's related to my neuropathy. It hasn't gotten to bad so far and I'm hoping it doesn't. There are quite a few members who have mentioned shaking hands in other discussions if you want to scan through the comments while you wait for others to respond - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/comments/.

My hands have started shaking recently and I am also nervous, which I wasn't before the peripheral neuropathy.

I've been dealing with neuropathy for over a decade now, and the title of this thread made me stop and take a look at my situation. I started building model cars again for the first time since 1980 last June, and it made me realize that I'm having issues with my hands as well. Sometimes when I'm trying to glue together some smaller pieces I have a hard time keeping my hands still.
Occasionally they'll shake so hard that even the simplest things are nearly impossible for me to do. I also have a habit of dropping things, especially small items or parts, and my fingers are numb a lot of the time. At first I thought it might be because of a carpal tunnel procedure on my right hand that failed. My thumb and index finger were still numb months after the surgery, and a second procedure on that hand didn't fix anything, so they've been numb for well over a decade now. But the fingers on both hands are numb most of the time.
Is it because of the neuropathy, I don't know.

I know what mean, trying to do precision type things are difficult….sometimes worse than others. I’m afraid it’s a thing with PN. Btw… I had carpel tunnel surgery on one hand….my neurologist told me to always wear wrist braces at night when you sleep…your hands naturally curl at wrist when sleeping which isn’t good for the nerve. Best wishes to you.

@stallen I've had 3 carpal tunnel surgeries on both hands, the last procedure was several years ago, and didn't help with the numbness. I don't know if wearing a wrist brace on my hands while I'm sleeping would help at this point, but I guess that I could ask my doctor about it.

Be retested. I have motor neuropathy. It caused really bad tremors and some days can’t sign my name or write.
I have severe axonal sensorimotor peripheral polyneuropathy, smalll fiber neuropathy, dysautonomia, CIDP along with mixed connective tissue disease, lupus, sojourns and Hashimotos. Anxiety goes with neuropathy with my motor neuropathy constantly cutting my fingers when I cook because I no longer have feeling in my fingers.
I have no feeling from above my knees down my legs. The IVIG is working on the cardiac autonomic neuropathy aka CAN and the motor neuropathy. CAN causes tachycardia/bradycardia and you blood pressure to jump all over the place. My body doesn’t regulate body temperature. I stay cold during the day but at night I sweat like crazy and my feet stay frozen.

Hi…were you ever able to determine a cause? Hereditary?

@stallen mine was autoimmune
My sed rate, CRP , complement C3 was elevated, speckled Ana positive and my ESR was high my IGA low. That’s shows autoimmune. I did not test positive for everything until last year. The mixed connnective tissue disease, lupus, Hashimotos and Sojourns. My labs showed autoimmune since 2002 when I had MRSA Bacterial Spinal Meningitis but as far as what autoimmune it took until 2025. It has been very frustrating walk to wait so long to test positive. What started it is my oldest son made me take pictures of my face because I had the lupus rash. Then I tested positive. I showed the rheumatologist and he started me on IVIG.

@artemis1886
I’ve had several nerve conduction tests, 2 full blood panels showing no autoimmune and several mri’s….no specific answers .
Have pre diabetes, high BP etc…so maybe that’s it but hard to narrow down. I do have autonomic involvement
Best wishes
