Plaquinal

Posted by lisabeans @lisabeans, Feb 14, 2018

Hello all. Hope everyone is well. I have not been active on the site lately. I have taken a job subbing in the school a for the teacher aids. It's been great but physically challenging. While my auto immune disease is still undiagnosed, my rheumatologist started me on plaqinal in November. It has helped on conjunction with leufonamide to relieve my pain to a functional level most days. However since a few weeks after starting the plaqinal, I developed a sinus infection. Since the infection and 2 rounds of antibiotics, I am still congested everyday and still have green/yellowish mucus. I am tired of doctors and pills so I have not gone back for more antibiotics. I had a fever initially but no fever now for over a month. Could this be a side effect from the plaqinal? Thanks in advance.

I cannot say this could not be a side effect for you, but I have been on Plaquenil for RA for more than 10 years and have had no similar problem.

Hi Lisa (@lisabeans) - It's good to hear from you and especially good that you've found some relief for your pain and are able to work. The congestion and green/yellowish mucus almost sounds like symptoms of the common cold. I wouldn't let it go to long without talking with or seeing your doctor. I don't like to take antibiotics either but quite a few years back I had symptoms similar to yours and let it go for three weeks before seeing a doctor because I thought it was just a cold and I would get over it. It turned into bronchitis and I got very sick. Now if I get a cold and it's not done by the second week I go see the doc. Here are the symptoms for bronchitis:

I didn't see your symptoms listed under the side effects for Plaquenil but did find a detailed list here:

Thanks @johnbishop. I hope you are doing well. Its been great working more hours but does kill me at the end of the day. I thought I did have bronchitis and went to the urgent care in January, I had the worst chest pains and felt like a heart attack. They said it was an inflammatory condition of the chest. Forget the name. They did not take xrays. I still get pains in the chest but not to that magnitude. I am just so tired of getting a head one day to be pushed back 2 steps the next. I am sure you understand that!

Strange, I have sinus issues also and I am on Plaquenil but I think with yellow and green discharge you absolutely need to see your doctor. They can CT your sinuses and do sputum tests to see if anything comes up. Even test for the flu. I really CANNOT say this is related to the medication as I have GERD and other issues but the congestion started with my auto-immune issue. For 5 years I\'ve been spitting up phelm, mostly in the a.m. when I wake up as I think it is in my sinuses and lands in the throat while I lay down. I\'ve had numerous tests and so far no luck diagnosing. Could be allergies as my immune system is not up to par. Good luck.

I also have GERD. I have been to a doctor in November and January. Both times they gave me an antibiotic but said it seems viral. I would clear up while on the antibiotic and then get worse as soon as I am off. It is insane.

A friend who lives many, many miles from me went to Mayo Clinic for surgery and sent me to a Mayo Clinic website for an explanation of her surgery. While at the site, I found links to other areas of healthcare and that\'s how I found MCC. Besides having RA, I am a type II diabetic and was diagnosed with Osteoporosis in July, 2017. Treatment with Prolia began in August. The second injection will be given next week. So far, so good.
