I’m a 33 male who’s had heartburn since my teens. Back in 2010 I went to see a GI doctor, got an endoscopy, and was put on omeprazole 20mg once/day. The endoscopy was clean, no H. Pylori, and the omeprazole worked perfectly. After being on omeprazole for over a year and my family doctors said I should lower the dosage to once every other day, then maybe switch to as needed. The lower dosage and as needed also worked and I was fine until April 2013. After splurging during a trip to Napa I had a couple of episodes of sharp stabbing pain just below and under my right shoulder blade that would only go away after taking Tums, pain severe enough to warrant a trip to the ER. They couldn’t find anything wrong at the ER other a little high count of white blood cells (borderline). They also gave me some IV anti acids.
After the ER visit I went to see my GI, went back to daily omeprazole and got an abdominal ultrasound which came back clean other than a benign kidney cyst. To be safe I also got an abdominal CT with contrast that came back clean and confirming the cyst was benign. Although the tests where all clean I still felt a leftover discomfort below my right shoulder blade. Starting in July instated having more severe back pain (a band across the middle of my back) along with bloating and high acidity in my stomach. I then went back to my GI, got blood workup done, and an endoscopy. The blood test came back completely normal and negative for H. Pylori. The endoscopy showed inactive chronic gastritis (in place for 12 to 18 months) and focal intestinal metaplasia.
After the endoscopy I had some type of a crisis when I had loose stools and/or diarrhea for a few days and lost 4-5 pounds. I was freaking out and was very anxious, I had dry mouth for a whole week. After that crisis I got better regained the weight and was fine other than the discomfort below my right shoulder blade. After about a month after I started having symptoms of another crisis with back pain, acidic stomach, on/off diarrhea, dry mouth, weight loss. A different GI suggested stress triggered IBS, but I’m again freaking out and looking for answers.
Does anyone have an idea?
