Probable NPH...new & frightening frontier

Posted by mcwoodham761 @mcwoodham761, Aug 5, 2019

ER physician ordered CT when I presented with Cardiac concerns from one symptom: fullness in my head and ears. The CT revealed enlarged lateral & third ventriculomegaly. Am awaiting referral to Neurologist. I have none of the classic symptoms of NPH. Do not want to wait until symptoms appear. I am 69. Had hard fall several months ago on bathtub, and other head injuries since childhood. Could this recent fall be the cause of the enlarged ventricles? Has anyone had a shunt implanted without severe symptoms?

Thank you sincerely for this most helpful check list. I will have all this info available. Finding this physician on the National Hydrocephalus Association's directory was encouraging. I am grateful to be a member of this Mayo group.

I have had balance andwalking issues for a couple of years now my spine doctor determined that I had a narrowing up in my C456 area of my spine and so did a ACDF procedure to loosen things up up there. But the procedure did not really help that much I still had the same issues afterward. in addition I have spinal stenosis,.
I then started seeing a neurologist we did a brain MRI and he noticed that there seem to be an excess buildup of fluid I can’t remember what the term was and it was something he wanted to investigate further so I’m having a 3T MRI this coming week. I also have some bladder and Bowel issues and I seem to be forgetting things more easily now. Any thoughts?

I had a workup for fluid on the brain several years ago, they said that I didn't have enough fluid on the brain for it to be considered NPH. You don't sound like I did back then worrying about fluid on the brain, they told me I have acqueduct stenosis, but that doesn't mean that I have NPH. You say you have balance and walking issues, I don't have that, or the narrowing in my spine.

Hello @bobpuls and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am glad to read that you have an appointment coming up this week so that you may learn a bit more about what was found on your brain MRI as well as hopefully do some additional diagnostic procedures.

Was NPH mentioned or is this what you feel could be the outcome based on what research you've been doing?
