Anyone have edema/leg swelling while nebulizing sodium chloride?

Has anyone had any swelling (ankles and feet) from sodium chloride inhalation? I’m using 3% twice a day.

Hello @lvalenti and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Swelling in your ankles and feet can be a sign of different causes. Have you been told yours is from the use of sodium chloride inhalation? How long has this been going on for?

I just assumed because it seems to have started when I began with the nebulizing. My pulmonologist doesn’t think that’s the cause so I’m following up with my primary care doctor. I’m just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same.

I am going to offer an opinion here, based on math. Bear with me for a minute.
Using a conversion between mililiters and grams, and a comparison between inhaled sodium and the sodium in the following foods, here is what I computed:
1 medium egg (50g) -no salt added in cooking) 70 mg sodium
1 oz potato chips (about 12 lightly slated) 100 mg
1 -4 ml (4g) vial 3% sodium (if none escapes as vapor) 120 mg
1 oz cheddar cheese 180 mg
1 g ( about 1/4 tsp) salt 400 mg
Average sodium in a "healthy" frozen meal 500 mg
Recommended Daily Allowance of Sodium <2300 mg
As you can see, the use of sodium nebs does count – but it can easily be offset by adjusting your diet only slightly. So I agree with your doc that the swelling is probably not from the salone.

Thank you Sue, I’d have to agree with you on that. I guess I was hoping it would be that simple.
