Muscle Atrophy following Crainiotomy for Brain Aneurysm

Posted by @julie1975, Aug 12, 2011

I had a craniotomy in Dec. 2008. I have suffered from severe pain in my head and neck due to atrophy of the muscle. I have tried everything from acupuncture, physical therapy, exercise, and have had to remain on methadone to control the pain to about a level 6 most days. Often it gets to about a 9 and causes nausea. I have a tenz unit and also have had an additional operation called a ganglionectomy 3. They clipped the nerve hoping to stop the pain. I spend most days with a heating pad or ice on the back of my head and neck. You can feel my skull and spine as there is no muscle covering it on the back left side of my head. I have seen every neurologist in my area and they all say they have never seen a case of atrophy this bad and don’t know what to do. Has anyone ever experienced this? I need help.

I volunteer with the Joe Niekro Foundation- they raise money for brain aneurysm research, support groups, education- I can check with the founder if she has had anyone in her support groups with the same experience. Do you mind me sharing your story with her?
