mold discovered in lungs
I was on the Big 3 for 16 months, but during that time I had only 2 negatives. My pulmo said the antibiotic regimen seemed to be not doing any good, and he suggested either putting me on them for 7 days instead of the 3 day routine or that I could just stop them. Because I was fearful of what damage they could be doing to my systems, I said I'd stop. I did. That was 1 1/2 years ago. Recently, I learned that now I have infection and also a mold in my lungs. Is it treatable?

@byurose You asked "...Recently, I learned that now I have infection and also a mold in my lungs. Is it treatable?" First, the specific infection and the mold type need to be identified, then you need to consult your pulmonologist and, if you have one, your infectious disease doctor.
Do you have an ID doc?
I'm so sorry of your new findings, have your doctors given you a course of treatment? You may also consider seeking other opinions. Even researching natural remedies, of course making sure they don't interfere with medications. I'm sure you hydrate well, use steam/humidity (these to thin mucus) Many people have used anti-inflammatory herbs to sooth lung irritation: ginger, turmeric & thyme in Teas it's easy. Make sure your home has no mold anywhere, Use air purifiers of good quality. I recall there is a special tea, many swear it helps w/lungs it's called Mullein Tea, it's a natural expectorant helps clear mucus in lungs, soothes irritated airways and relieves chest congestion.
sending hugs and prayers for your health
Thanks for the reminder. How do I discover if and where my home has mold and how do I get rid of it safely?
When you were on the meds and then after you stopped, what airway clearance techniques were you using? Did you nebulize 7% saline during that time? I had a fungal infection during my course of treatment after I was told that I had a negative MAC result after bronchoscopy, however they discovered the fungal infection and I had to take a drug for that. That was a difficult treatment to combine with the 3 drug regimen. I did not know anything about airway clearance techniques at that time. It was only after the MAC came back and I couldn't tolerate an everyday drug regimen that I found this group (thank goodness!!!) and learned proper airway clearance techniques. Now I'm in watch and wait mode but doing twice a day nebulizing 7% and using an Afflo vest twice a day for 30 minutes a session as well. CTs have been stable with no progression so far for the last year.

1 ReactionIt is not uncommon for fungi such as Aspergillus to appear in a sputum culture from time to time. Finding a fungus in a culture does not automatically mean it needs to be treated.
Many bronchiectasis specialists look at the whole picture, including symptoms, CT findings, lung function, and whether the same organism continues to appear over time. Because antifungal medications can have significant side effects and drug interactions, treatment is usually reserved for situations where there is evidence that the fungus is contributing to disease rather than simply being present.
Warm regards,

5 Reactions@byurose:
I was diagnosed with Apiotrichum Mycotoxinivorans lung fungus, one of the rarer fungi, 3 years ago and so far am doing fine without medication. However, my ID doctor would like for me to take the lesser of 5 side effect medicines called Itraconazole. They all can have troublesome side effects, but Itra has less than the others, according to my local pulmonologist and ID doctor. I am on no medications for the past 3 years. I tried the Big 3 at the initial diagnoses of MAC/BE/fungus but was unable to take them. So, my sputum samples come back Apio each time for the past 3 years and for the past 5 months my sputum samples show no AFB for MAC, which I find strange, given I'm not on any medications. The samples have always shown MAC or MAI and yet for the past months show no AFB. Perhaps they are on vacation? However, the fungus is not. Best wishes!
