Molar Pregnancy

Posted by @pamelacelia, Dec 27, 2016

Hello everyone, my cousin who is 21 suffered a Molar pregnancy a couple months ago, unfortunately not much was known about Molar pregnancies here in Trinidad, a D&C was performed to remove the moles however for some reason there was a regrowth of the moles and another D&C was done two weeks after the first one, a CT scan done a few days after the second procedure showed no remaining tissue, she was released from hospital but has clinic visits every two weeks, since she had the procedure done she’s had issues with heavy bleeding every two weeks or so, she gets headaches and dizziness, her hcg levels dropped and then it went back up, the Dr who is attending her in clinic says there is no problem because her histology came back negative, her last CA 125 came back reading 27.0 U/ml that was on the 5/12/2016 and the Dr said it was good however she did another CA 125 today and she said it was 45. something I haven’t seen the results yet, do it went up, she’s also been bleeding since last Sunday. Unfortunately the Dr’s in this country tend to not look to deeply into illnesses, they did not even know what a Molar Pregnancy was, the Dr who is attending her now says she is fine, no further tests have been done,we spoke to her attending on the ward and he said that fertility tests should have been done and she should’ve started receiving chemo when the clinic Dr saw that her hcg levels were not dropping. Is there anyone who has had a similar experience who can shed some light on this situation, she has a clinic appointment tomorrow and I’m waiting to hear what the Dr’s say, frankly I’m not happy at all with the Dr’s nonchalant responses to our concerns and I intend to tell her so tomorrow. I look forward to any feedback.

@pamelacelia, Hello and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. We are so glad you posted this discussion. Even though this topic has not been shared by anyone in the community, that doesn’t mean another member hasn’t experienced it or been diagnosed with it before.

I bet your cousin is grateful to have someone like you there to help advocate for her. I can’t imagine how traumatic and scary this experience has been for her. Please let us know how her clinic visit goes tomorrow.

Thank you for your kind sentiments and also thank you for the link in reading it I’ve realized that she may have GTD because she did have a regrowth of the moles a couple weeks after the first D&C, and she has had persistent bleeding, I just feel the Dr’s here in this country isn’t proactive enough, since her last D&C they have not done a scan or ultrasound to make sure there is no regrowth, even with the bleeding and the headaches and dizziness, they say that she’s doing good, I’m just waiting to hear what they say today.

Hello all, Happy New Year’s Eve, so an update on my cousins clinic visit, so on Tuesday her Dr was not there, normal occurrence for Drs’ here especially as it’s the holidays, but a junior Dr was there and we spoke with him, we told him our concerns and I told him we were not satisfied with the care she was getting, so he sent her to get an ultrasound done, now hospital care here is supposed to be free but so far she’s had to pay for all her blood tests, we had to pay for the ultrasound too, the ultrasound came back basically ok, but it did state she had polycistic ovaries, and a pregnancy test done came back positive, the sonographer recommended a histologic correlation be done. Right so she was told to come back to clinic on Wednesday to see her Dr, we went back on Wednesday, the CA 125 test showed an increase in protein from 27.0 U/ml two weeks ago to 45.8 U/ml this week, the Dr said it’s not a significant increase, when we asked about polycistic ovaries she again said it’s nothing to worry about its normal in girls her age, when I asked about the heavy bleeding every two weeks or so, Dr again said it’s nothing to worry about that it’s probably caused by the polycistic ovaries, I don’t think she even realized that she contradicted herself there, for everything, she says is normal nothing to worry about. I’m very tired of this Dr, she said the rise in the CA 125 isn’t significant enough that if it went up to 200 U/ml then we’ll have to worry, so she’s waiting for some drastic change to show, in the meantime all the pregnancy tests are coming back positive, the two done on Tuesday one at the clinic, one at the ultrasound center and another one done again on Wednesday at the clinic and then my cousin did one herself on Monday night as well. So her next clinic date is on the 24th January, she has to repeat the CA 125 and do a Beta HCG and a blood count.

Hello all, my cousin called me last night to tell. Me she’s bleeding yet again, the last round ended on the 27th December 2016, and when she goes to clinic the Dr will only say it’s nothing to worry about, but I honestly feel as though it’s time to start worrying.

Hello @pamela,

Not sure how much help I will really be but in July of 2015 I experienced a complete Molar Pregnancy. I had a D & C and they removed it all. I then had blood draws starting out every week. I was very fortunate as my HCG numbers decreased every week and my blood draws were able to be moved to every two weeks and then eventually monthly. I guess I am with you, I would be concerned if her numbers and protein are not going down as they should be. I know it’s very treatable if the “cancer” is caught early after a molar. I would keep pushing for answers and I think they need to look into it further. And on a side note, we were not allowed to try for another child for at least 1 year from date. And now I am 27 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby :). Good luck with everything for your cousin!

Thank you and congratulations @jlovejoy23 I do have good news, yesterday she had some blood work done and her BHCG levels has dropped to 123 and her CA 125 has dropped to 30. So we’re very happy all round, she has to repeat the tests in two months time but we’re confident everything will be back to normal and she’s decided she’s going back to school so they don’t plan on trying for a baby but she’s young still just 21 so she has time.

Hi everyone so just an update on my cousin’s situation, the specialist Dr saw her at her last clinic appointment and said all is well that she is on the road to full recovery. So we’re quite overjoyed at this news.

I have had two molar pregnancies a long time ago. The 2nd one metastasized to my lung which required chemotherapy. I was treated at Mayo MN. Be vigilant with her care. If you have questions I would be fine with talking further about my experience.

Hi Nancy, there was actually a few spots on her lungs, it showed up on the x-ray but the Dr’s said it’s nothing to worry about, now by your reply I’m starting to wonder, they took another x-ray but they haven’t gotten the report on it yet, did you have trouble breathing sometimes and coughing if you had anything cold to eat or drink?

I do not remember any breathing difficulty nor coughing due to cold foods and drinks.

My cousin has been having difficulty breathing sometimes, she continually clears her throat and starts coughing especially after consuming anything cold, she had a CT scan done last week, so we should get the results back in a couple weeks from now, I’m worried that the Molar pregnancy metastasized and she wasn’t treated for it when she should’ve been. Keeping our fingers crossed hoping for the best.
