Anyone have mobility/balance issues post-spinal dural AVF ligation?
Following up on my post from 2024.
Quick recap: thoracic dAVF found at T10-T11, treated with open surgery and ligation at Mayo. Now about two years out.
Recovery has been slow and, honestly, harder than I expected. Balance is still poor, I've fallen multiple times (most recently this past March), and I now have nerve compression issues showing up in my lumbar and cervical spine. My local surgeon has recommended a lumbar fusion, but my Mayo neurosurgeon isn't convinced surgery will help the leg weakness — the thinking is that scar tissue from the AVF ligation may be complicating things.
I'm looking to connect with others who had AVF ligation (open surgery, not just embolization) and are further out from surgery — especially anyone dealing with ongoing balance problems, falls, or unclear next steps on further spine surgery. What has your recovery timeline looked like? Did things keep improving past year 2, or plateau? Anyone try alternatives to more surgery (PT approaches, myofascial work, etc.) with good results?
