Liver cirrhosis doctors

Posted by carroljeffries @carroljeffries, Jan 3 9:39am

I was recently diagnosed with end stage liver disease - stage 4 cirrhosis. I live in Ohio and was wondering where the besT liver cirrhosis doctors are located. I'm not sure about my doctor yet annd the wait annd see approach so I might seek a 2 nd opinion on treatment.
Does anyone have any information they would like to share ?
Thank you in advance.

Hi, @carroljeffries,
A doctor who treats liver cirrhosis is a Hepatologist or Liver Specialist. Many patients, like myself, have gone thru a progression of doctors/specialists from Primary Care to Gastroenterologist to Hepatologist. As for myself, I was always pleased with the next level of specialty care that I was referred to by the 'at that time' current provider.

It sounds like you have an upcoming appointment. Is that correct?
In preparation for your appointment, I would like to share this link aboutCirrhosis - Diagnosis , tests, treatment, etc. I especially suggest that you view the -Cirrhosis FAQs by Transplant hepatologist Sumera Ilyas, M.B.B.S. answers the most frequently asked questions about cirrhosis.

@rosemarya thank you for the information.
I have an appt with the dietician on Jan 20, a phone appt checkin with the Clinical Pharmacist/Hepatology on Jan 21, and an appt on May 29 with the Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP-C, CNP).

I'm hoping to talk with my Gastroenterologist in the next week about some other test results. I want to ask him some questions about my liver cirrhosis treatment.

I hope that you will get answers to your questions and will come away with a better understanding of your health situation. One thing that I learned during my journey with liver disease, liver failure, transplant is to listen to the doctor and to follow his/her instructions.

Carrol, An extra set of ears is always a good idea. Do you have someone who can go to the appointments with you? Are you making a list of your questions?

@rosemarya
Yes I have a list started and I think my husband is going with me to the May appt.
I appreciate all your insight as navigating this diagnosis is difficult and much more involved.

I use the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. I have strong feelings towards this facility and staff. Everyone from the garage attendant to the surgeon are genuinely concerned for my success. I had my transplant 10/2023. They are very considerate and professional in every way. I highly recommend Mayo Jax.

That's good to hear. This is a hard disease with many different stages and symptoms. I'm happy your transplant went well and glad you are doing well. Happy they are taking good care of you and that you recommend the facility. I've read many places the Mayo Clinic is # 1 in liver disease treatment and transplant. After my next conversation with my Gastroenterologist, I may try to get a 2nd opinion.
Thank you so much for being so kind to offer your thoughts.

UPMC Liver Transplant Program - I'm in Hershey and my Hepatologist referred me to there or Philly as far as best hospitals. I'm closer to Thomas Jefferson Transplant hospital out of the 2. He spoke very highly of them. I also hear Mayo Clinic also. Look them up. Good luck!!
