kyphosis from Thoracic fractures
I have had a few osteoporotic fractures in the last few years. I am recovering from the T-9 which was the worst. I did not even know I had the others, T7 and T11. This last one really curved my spine and pushed out my stomach. I'm 79, but have always been active up a few months ago when I had this last fracture. I feel like my life has changed forever. It has been 4 months and I have come a long way, but because I have not been able to exercise or walk much, I have no strength and my walk is unstable. Just started PT and I am determined to do everything I can to at least get back to some sort of normal life. I have not been on meds and I know that will be an issue. I am still deciding on that because of all the side effects, etc.
I was wondering if anyone with similar fractures and kyphosis have had any success in improving posture with PT and/or strength training. I know I am limited right now, even though I am healing but being bent over affects all your organs.
I would appreciate any input, I am not giving up!

eileenhb, when those compression fractures heal you have less pain, but the don't heal in the prefracture height. I haven't tried spine jack you might consider https://www.youtube.com/watch
Forteo stabilizes the fracture, prevents the invasion of nerves into the unstable vertebra and hastens healing.
You have the spirit we all need.

1 ReactionI broke my T9 10 years ago and had kyphoplasty. The best therapy for me was done in the pool. The best PT for me was walking in chest deep water in a pool. Scans have shown that my kyphoplasty is now starting to break up, some pieces have been found in my left lung and I have shrunk 2 inches. I have been put on most of the bone building drugs and have had bad reactions to all but forteo (the first one I was put on 8 years ago). I wish I could be more encouraging. I did get a recumbent low rider trike and ride that quite often and I do 10 minutes a day standing on my vibration plate. I’ve been considering getting a special posture bra to try. When I had to wear my solid back brace it gave me good posture and relieved any discomfort. Sending prayers your way.

It's so hard to know what to try. My spine Dr. talked about kyphoplasty but he was not pushing it. He said it should be done soon after fracture. I thought I made a mistake not having that procedure but I did read about it breaking up. So sorry you had that experience.
It sounds like you are just as determined as I am to improve as much as we can. I have not had Dexa since 2015 since I refused to take meds. I now have one scheduled in a couple weeks. No doubt it will not look good. I know there are many new drugs but they still all come with side effects. I tried a water aerobics class but it made me realize how weak my muscles are now after several months of not working out. I will have to try just walking as you mentioned.
Let me know if you find a posture bra that works.
Prayers to you as well.
Having the kyphoplasty procedure caused me to have organ crowding. I constantly feel like I just ate a thanksgiving meal. I had to alter all of my clothes because they didn't fit. I still have pain. I wish I had not had that procedure and would definitely not recommend it to anyone. Pure misery!

1 ReactionI'm thankful now that I did not have the kyphoplasty. My clothes are all tight in the waist even though I have lost a couple pounds. Of course everything has compressed from height loss and stomach is pushed out. By the end of the day I look 8 months pregnant. I have to keep telling myself it could be worse, just keep putting your feet on the ground each day.

2 ReactionsWith the fractures due to the osteoporosis medicine if so, what med were you on? I’m so sorry to hear this. My rheumatologist asks me to work with a therapist to continue strength and balance support.
@chuee1225
I have not been on any osteoporosis medicine nor was I on hrt. I am sure when I have the Dexa scan and see the endocrinologist he will want me to start something. I am really resisting that and started PT and also considering working with a trainer experienced with fragile bones to rebuild my strength.
Are you or have you been on osteoporosis medicine?
@musicteach, I hadn't read about kyphoplasty breaking up. So, I finding your post so helpful.
Spinejack can still be done after kyphoplasty, I don' t have any idea about how advisable it would be. Can anything be done about the pieces in the lung? I wish this hadn't happened to you. I do appreciate your post.
