Is prescription medicine my only option at my age?

Posted by joglow @joglow, Jul 19 8:44am

I'm 71, and just found out I have osteoporosis in left hip. I was shocked because my last DEXA 2 years ago didn't show any osteoporosis. Is medication necessary. My bone scan said it was a -3.9.

Look at your diet. Make sure you are getting enough calcium protein in your diet. Check your magnesium, levels, D3, and K2. Then if you are not exercising, start resistance training. Go slow, and stay committed. It takes 6 months to 18 months to slowly build bone.

Have you had any fractures related to your osteoporosis?
Did your treating physician go over your scores and what those numbers reflect?
Is an endocrinologist treating you and what is the proposed treatment plan?

Glad you are here. There is lots of experience and wisdom that you can tap into. You may want to go back to the main category of osteoporosis and look at the subheadings
It is easy to get overwhelmed as you begin to research.
Another good source on you tube are the OsteoBoston presentations with osteoporosis experts.

Haven't any fractures ever. My bone PA just gave me the score of -3.9. Nothing was mentioned about an endocrinologist

@joglow

I asked because people often go to an endocrinologist after an osteoporosis diagnosis.
In my case, my endocrinologist has quite a bit of training and experience in treating osteoporosis. It might be helpful to you if I e of your providers could go over your scores and options you have, if they are experienced in treating osteoporosis.
If they do not then I wonder if there is someone in your medical community who does. There are many changes in treatment and views on treatment after the women's health initiative study was found to have flaws. Seems like many of us here are doing our own research so that we can advocate for ourselves and become effective partners with our physicians.
Congratulations on having no fractures thus far.

Unfortunately I think it happens pretty quickly the older we are. I had osteopenia at 68 and osteoporosis at 70! Of course, this is my second time with the diagnosis. First time in my 30’s I did Forteo and then one infusion of Reclast. I refused another infusion of Reclast.

Are you saying you had a -3.9 in one hip and everything else is normal/osteopenic?

REPLY

I've had ostopenia for years with no change. Otherwise, nothing except the -3.9 in left hip
