is it safe to take magnesium with Keppra?
I have problems with sleep and cramps, post stroke I also have had 2 seizures since my stroke, I'm very hesitant to take any extra meds / supplements?

Best to consult with your physician. Better to be safe.

3 ReactionsI've been taking magnesium with keppra for many years. What's no ill effecta and everything I've read says there's no reason not to, nor has my neurologist told me not to. Unless you have another condition or sensitivity that would cause issues. Jakeduck is correct. It never hurts to check with tour doctor or pharmacist.

Welcome to our Epilepsy group here at Connect! If you'd like, feel free to share more of your epilepsy journey here:

I've also been taking magnesium L-threonate for better cognition and sleep, together with Keppra, but I consulted my neurologist before starting it. I'd recommend doing the same, as @jakedduck1 and @absentsenior already suggested.
I'm sharing a couple of other discussions on magnesium supplementation in our group that might interest you:

Brain fog is something quite common in epilepsy, due to both the condition itself and the medications. I'm sure if you ask your doctor again, she'll understand completely.

2 ReactionsFrom what I’ve found, magnesium and Keppra (levetiracetam) do not have a known significant interaction. The official Keppra prescribing information also notes that levetiracetam is unlikely to have significant drug interactions.
If you’re thinking about taking magnesium, though, I would still check with your pharmacist or neurologist, especially because the type and dose of magnesium matter and your other medications and kidney function can also be important.
For reliable information, you can research levetiracetam on MedlinePlus, which is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine:
MedlinePlus – Levetiracetam
You can also look up the official medication labeling on DailyMed, which provides FDA-approved drug information:
DailyMed – Keppra (levetiracetam)
I always think it’s a good idea to give your pharmacist your complete list of medications and supplements so they can check everything together. ❤️
