Is it Nash or Mash

Posted by cekkk @cekkk, Jul 24, 2025

Ultrasound for another matter revealed that I had NASH. Nothing more was said to me than that. Now I am under the impression it is no longer Nash but is Mash. Apparently it is not a serious matter with me but I don't know for certain. What I want to ask is,,is it reversible if I should after 82 years decide to take better care of my diet?

NASH has been renamed MASH..not that it’s the next step in a progression of liver illness. No one said anything to me either and it quickly whithin a couple years turned into cirrhosis when the scarring showed up. It’s my understanding that diet can change the course before the scarring starts. I have improved my diet and my last Scans and ultrasounds show no progression. I am 68. My liver enzymes have now been normal for almost a year. I’ve lost weight. I cut down on fat and sugars. I make sure I’m eating complex carbs. I do eat fruit but I watch amounts. My air fryer is used a lot! Good luck in what you choose.

My medical team has told me nothing. I am surprised at the lack of any plan or anything I can do to keep it from getting worse. I am primarily vegetarian, and try to maintain a healthy diet. I ended up with Fatty liver disease after a bad food poisoning incident where I was prescribed prilosec. I had this same thing happen 20 years ago where (I believe) the prilosec caused extreme unending hunger and I gained 100 lbs. I am not happy about my medical care, as my primary wants to do nothing (like Wegovy) and just wait for me to get worse before doing anything. It’s depressing.

@dianatx maybe ask for a referral to a dietitian. They can fill you in about diet changes needed. I am on a small dose of tirzepatide for weight loss. The GLP1 meds are known to help with your liver. I had to change Drs to get the meds I wanted. I found a new endocrinologist when mine wouldn’t fight for me getting the meds. You have to be your own advocate and tell them what you want. Some Drs don’t know anything about these meds and are scared to prescribe them. I have gotten my life back. Down 122#. Off meds and I feel great. I had to change my diet and start exercising eat more protein, drink more water, but if you want to be healthy that’s what you have to do, the meds are not magic, you have to work the program. You said you have gained 100#, do you have sleep apnea? Zepbound has been approved for sleep apnea. Hopefully other things in the future. I wish you the best.
